Longwood is a small town located in Brevard County, Florida. The population was 1,371 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Hollywood Combined Statistical Area. The town was founded by German immigrants in 1853 and named after Longitude Point on Lake Okeechobee. The first post office opened in 1857 and it continued to serve until 1888 when it moved to nearby Melbourne. In 1908, Longwood became an incorporated village with a mayor and six trustees who were elected by residents rather than appointed by the county commissioners. In 1840, Captn John Smith discovered land that would become Longwood on what is now US-1 (later State Road 441). A landing ground was established at this spot where settlers could disembark their boats for transportation to other plantations near Ft Myers or Daytona Beach. By 1848, there were more than fifty families residing in the area around Longwood Landing including twelve slaves owned by Mr. Fenton of Fort Myers who built a steamboat dock there for his passengers and cargo. In 1851, Lt Col George Washington Capps set up a military post here called Fort Capps which served as a base for suppressing Seminole Indian resistance during the Seminole War (1835-1845). After hostilities ceased, Fort Capps reverted back to civilian control but later resumed military use as an artillery position during World War II before being decommissioned in 1964 and closed down altogether in 1984 due to budget cutbacks within the Army Corps of Engineers; however, portions of its entrance plaza remain open today as part of the downtown community park district which includes much ofOldtownLongwood Historic District along US-1E south side) Over time since then many new subdivisions have been developed adjacent to Old TownLongwood while others have crept into its confines such that only two blocks long continuous Main Street still exists today separated only by yards between homes on either side while major thoroughfares like US-1E are blocked off entirely from view behind high walls or fences enclosing large lots currently used for agricultural purposes only .
