Longwood, Florida is a small town located in Polk County, Florida. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from the longleaf pine trees that can be found in and around the community. The first people to live in Longwood were settlers who arrived in 1835. By 1840, there were 10 families living in Longwood. In 1851, a post office was founded in the town and by 1865 it had a population of 507. The Panic of 1893 caused many businesses to close and this led to a decrease in population until 1907 when it increased to 1,022. A cotton gin was built on South Main Street in 1909 which soon became known as “the Cotton Gin” due to its production of cottonseed oil for use by local farms. The mill closed down after World War II but reopened as a hotel later that decade called “The Old Plantation” which still exists today. In 1965, Longwood became an unincorporated community when it merged with nearby Hernando County. As an unincorporated community,Longwood did not have any governing body other than its own board of directors which is why it is difficult to say exactly when or how Longwood came into being as an independent settlement outside of Hernando County. It should be noted though that some believe that Longwood may have originated back before 1955 when two men named Harry Morse and Floyd Nix set up shop across from what is now Lakeland High School on State Road 54 near Interstate 474 (now US-61). From their business operations they started developing ideas for creating an incorporated village within Hernando County so their location could be better protected from developer influence; their efforts failed however and similar concepts were tried again several times over the next few decades without much success until finally becoming reality with incorporation on February 6th 2005 under the name of "Longwood Village". Longwood was founded in 1868 by a group of plantation owners looking for a new site to grow cotton. The town grew rapidly, and by the early 20th century it had become one of the most important agricultural communities in Florida. Longwood became especially prosperous after World War II, when its plantations were turned into large commercial farms. However, since the late 21st century Longwood has been experiencing significant decline in population and economic activity. The history of Longwood begins with its founding as a small plantation community on the banks of River Okeechobee. The original settlers were white men from Georgia and Alabama who purchased land east of Jacksonville on which to establish a cotton plantation. The first inhabitants of Longwood were African Americans who worked on the farmsteads that surrounded the town. As long as there was work available, they did their best to provide for their families. In 1868, when Captain John Auld discovered what would become Longwood, he appointed Jno Ladd as headmaster of the schoolhouse at present-day Broadway Street and High Street. In those days public education was not available to Negroes in Florida; however, Ladd managed to get some pupils together and teach them some rudimentary reading and arithmetic before leaving for his own plantation downriver. It wasn't until much later that blacks began attending American schools within sight or reach of their homes in Tallahassee (then Jacksonville), Fort Myers (then Naples), or Daytona Beach (then Daytona Beach). However, despite providing opportunities for education for all citizens during Reconstruction era America's "Great Migration," progress toward full civil rights for black Floridians stalled until after World War II when President Harry S Truman issued Executive Order 9066 which ordered all racial discrimination in government employment ended nationwide! In 1947 Mayor Gwynn Dyer organized a citizens' committee called "The Committee To Help Negroes Get Housing" which successfully lobbied Tallahassee City Hall officials to approve plans by developers Charles King & Co., Incorporated to build over 3100 units high-rise apartments exclusively for Negro tenants! This legislation led directly to prominent African American architect/builders/developers such as Roy Lee & Associates) founding what is now known as “King’s Row” – an exclusive enclave within downtown Tallahassee – becoming one of Americas top real estate developments during this period! It should be noted that these early pioneers actually started out living on adjacent estates belonging to white landowners but gradually evolved into their own integrated community because they could see how valuable it was for Negroes accessible transportation (streetcars ran through Allendale Plantation right up towards downtown), educational opportunities (the segregated Key Field School offered primary grades through 12 while also serving as an excellent preparatory school designed expressly for black students; today Key Field Elementary School continues house grades PreK-5th grade along with comprehensive physical education activities), job opportunities (Negroowned businesses created jobs throughout downtown during post-war boom years!), green space (!ahem!) – you name it – once ghettoized areas like Allendale went onto gaining brownie points with whites due largely thereto being spared fire damage during Hurricane Andrew back then we still took pride in our newly renovated streetscape including keeping all driveways mowed even if there WAS snow on them inside your home 🙂 . And don't forget about that famous “Mammy’s Pizza” chain located just off Main Street near Broadway where local kids would come Saturday nights seeking entertainment foregoing harsh academic discipline necessary at many other places back then 😉 . Longwood is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg metropolitan area. The first European to visit Longwood was José de Escobar y Costilla on October 12, 1763. He and his exploration party were looking for new land to colonize in what is now Polk County after experiencing some severe weather in Cuba. The first white person to live in Longwood was James Fenton who arrived with his family on May 15, 1812 from Kentucky. He built a cabin near the present day intersection of Eastern Boulevard and US-1A (now US-1) known as Fenton's Ford. As early as 1820, there were several petitions circulated by citizens of Longwood seeking annexation into Hillsborough County because they felt that they had been neglected by their government during the time when Hillsborough county was only a small part of Florida and many people living in this region did not own property or were paid very little for it. On January 3, 1830, act No. 9 of the General Assembly created Polk County and annexed Longwood into it; however, because Tallahassee City Council refused to give its consent to annexation without having more information about the town's capabilities as an agricultural center (i.e., whether it could support a courthouse/ jail), Longwood remained unannexed until 1881 when it became one of twenty towns included in the original Tampa–St Petersburg metropolitan area through an ordinance passed by Congress which approved plans for incorporation of all localities within St Petersburg Township on December 5th following an election held November 16th of that year resulting in George Washington Smith being elected Mayor of Tampa Bay; thus becoming one half member –along with fellow towns Dunedin (1836), Bridgeport (1868), Clearwater (1892), Sanford (1922), Auburndale (1948) –of what would become known as "The City." On February 14th 1904 Mayor Smith delivered a speech before the newly formed Joint Legislative Committee on Political subdivisions proposing creation of two political subdivisions within Tampa Bay: Pinellas County and Hillsborough County; both recommendations were accepted without objection by Senators John Middleton Murphy and Milligan Hervey who chaired that committee along with Congressman David Boren who also sat on that committee between 1904-06 serving concurrently as Senator from Missouri while he served simultaneously as Mayoralty candidate for St Petersburg Township but lost to Murphy). This action effectively seceded Tallahassee from Hillsborough County creating Pinellas County which at its inception had 10 miles long main street running east-west while Hillsborough had 8 miles long main street running north-south which eventually became just State Road 725 today southbound SR 775 eastbound). As such Pinellas Countys initial boundaries extended well beyond those now included within Lakeland Municipal Limits including much territory now located inside city limits including much undeveloped swampy terrain extending inland upriver past Wauchula Lake where today’sSR734 begins) .
