In 1926, Lieutenant Colonel Edward C. Beavers donated a machine gun to the park. In 1938, Sergeant First Class Leroy Bourgeois gave away an automatic pistol as a gift to the park’s police department. In 1942, Corporal Lloyd Witherspoon donated an M-1 Carbine to the park’s air defense unit. During World War II, Longwood became home to 1st Air Defense Command (AAC) and Sergeant First Class Leroy Bourgeois was instrumental in providing security at Dole Field on Pensacola Beach during that time period. In 1961, Trooper Roy Toney from Company P3/2d Battalion Texas Rangers presented two rifles – one with a scope and another without – as gifts to LNMP along with postcards and candy bars for members of the military family living in town at that time; it was also LtCol's 25th anniversary celebration for LNMP! Longwood was founded in 1836 by Increase Mather and his brother John. At first it was called "Mather's River". In 1851, J.B. Payne bought land in what is now Longwood and named it after himself, Longwood Park. Longwood is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white people to live in Longwood were Methodists who founded the First Baptist Church there in 1892. The town was named for John C. Long, a U.S. congressman from Alabama and an early booster of citrus production in Florida. In 1923, railroad developer and entrepreneur James Pogue bought land adjacent to present-day Longwood and built a depot and train station there which remains extant today as Pogue Station Museum (www.poguestationmuseum.com). Pogue also donated $100,000 to create the first high school in Polk County - Independence High School (now Parkland HS) - which opened its doors in 1928 under guidance of then-Principal David Witherspoon.[1] In 1934, construction began on what would become America's secondlargest airfield after Tampa Bay's Hillsborough Field – now Plantation Airpark - with help from Longwood boosters including Congressman Jesse Jackson Sr., future U.S. President George H.W._George Bush II and then-Governor Bob Martinez[2]. America's largest airport until it was closed by federal government regulations in 1978 became operational as McCoy International Airport within few years after its creation thanks largely to donations from community members like Jimmy Carter[3], former NFL player Cris Carter[4], real estate mogul Donald Trump[5][6] and others who saw it as an opportunity to bring jobs and investment into their towns/cities; especially given that its primary tenant had been passenger airlines such as American Airlines serving Palm Beach County while McCoy served Kissimmee/Orlando area airports; thus giving those areas some much needed competition while also providing much needed infrastructure development opportunities for local businesses interested therein (McCoy Airport today still provides commercial aviation services primarily through US Airways [7]). indeed since its inception McCoy has long been one of the busiest airports within Regional Airports Authority boundaries with over 2 million passengers processed annually(www9).[8][9] In recent years however things have changed quite a bit for Shorty Airport located just east of downtown Jacksonville due largely to political infighting among elected officials related thereto with little or no assistance from either side from either party towards making Shorty more viable or providing any sort of long term solution other than simply allowing development adjacent thereto continue unabated thereby resulting ultimately only benefiting developers rather than helping shorty remain viable both environmentally speaking & economically speaking[10]; something which unfortunately continues even unto this day!
