In 1942, the United States Navy deployed a squadron of the USS Lexington (CV-4) to Longwood in Florida as part of World War II’s “Greatest Generation.” The Lexington was one of only two American warships ever sent to serve in the European Theater of Operations during World War II and its deployment coincided with President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s America First policy. Longwood was founded in 1821 by Capt. John Long and his wife, Rebecca. The first post office at Longwood was established in 1827. The townspeople built a log cabin on the same site that still stands today. In 1830, surveyor John Wessinger visited the area and pronounced it too swampy to be viable as a town. He recommended that the town name be changed to "Lonoke." The name change may have been due to Captain Long's connections with King George III of England and his desire to maintain some resemblance between Lonoke and London, England. In 1835, Captain Long donated land for a public school which became known as Ligonier School District No. 5. In 1865, the Ligonier School District was merged into the Hillsborough County School Board In 1898, Longwood incorporated as a city with a population of just over 1000 people The city's first mayor was Wm Bendix (1899-1901) In 1907-08, Mayor HUGH WILLIAMS (1907-10) successfully campaigned for an increase in the city's water supply from wells near Lakeland Mayor WILLIAMS also successfully lobbied for larger sidewalks and streetlights throughout the city

A year later, they founded the First Baptist Church in Longwood. In 1868, the town became a city and was renamed for James K. Polk, who had been president of the United States that year.
