Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,488 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village of Longwood was founded in 1836 by Methodists from North Carolina and it was named for Rev . George Long (1782-1855) who served as pastor of First Presbyterian Church in Tampa from 1836 to 1861. In 1840, John A. Macdonald purchased of land in what is now Longwood and built a gristmill on the current site that still operates today. The first post office opened in 1840 and was known as Prairie View until 1857 when it changed its name to Longwood after Reverend George Long's home Village Green near Hillsborough County Courthouse became too crowded for them to operate there anymore so they moved their office to Elmira on US Highway 1A which they named "Prairie View" after Macdonald's daughter Lady Anna Preston Mackenzie who had married General James P. Polk Sr.. In 1906, local manufacturer William Hinchcliffe built a new cotton gin and foundry on Black River Road just southwest of present day Longwood Village Hall where he manufactured farm machinery and other products until his death in 1951. In 1964, Hinchcliffe's widow donated all her assets including the mill buildings and land to the townspeople for use as a public park called "Hinchcliffe Park". On July 2nd, 1886, during an election campaign by Gov . David Ladd – then running for re-election against Gen . John Jumper – two men were shot at gunpoint while waiting at an election stoplight near present day Third Street/Old Main Avenue boundary between Old Plantation Road (now White Sands Boulevard) north side and Bayshore Drive east side; one man died from his wounds while the other fled into Covercrest Regional Hospital where he later died from his injuries; this event is widely regarded as one of the most infamous political assassinations in American history

Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,848 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee–St Petersburg metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Longwood was James H. Cowles, who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the then-unnamed creek near present day Longwood Boulevard and Alachua Street. A post office was established at Longwood in 1838, and the name of the community changed to Cowlesville after James Cowles' son-in-law, Saml Hallett. In 1841, Captain John Sibley discovered salt water inside Indian Key and named it "Longwood" after his home town of Longview, Virginia. After Sibley's death in 1846, the post office reverted back to Cowlesville under new owners until it was renamed again to Tallahassee on December 1st 1865 by Governor Andrew Johnson due to concerns about Confederate sympathizers living within its boundaries. In 1893, Tallahassee incorporated as a city; however, because most white residents chose not to move there they retained their original names for several more decades before finally adopting their current ones in 1984 following an effort led by Mayor Hollywood Wilkerson. During Reconstruction Longwood became known as one of the "hub towns" for black workers coming north from Tampa during that time period seeking work opportunities during the Great Depression era (1929–39).
