The name "Longwood" originated from an Indian word meaning "place of plenty." In 1885, the post office changed its name to Longwood after James Ewing Long who had homesteaded there in 1875 along with his brother Bigelow and their families. In 1904, the village was organized into a town when the first election resulted in a victory for George Fenton as mayor over incumbent John Sitton by 346 votes to 133. The early settlers were farmers and stockmen who raised horses and cattle for local consumption, supplemented their income with lumbering or other industrial activities such as manufacturing cigars or making soap until about 1910 when all textile production ended due to World War I restrictions on imports of foreign textiles (the war also caused prices for raw materials to increase). With no new industry arriving during the 1920s through 1930s depressed economy led many residents to leave for good including James Ewing Long who sold his land near present day Interstate 95 Business Loop and returned to live on it later renamed “Ewing” Boulevard which runs through downtown today still called home by many former residents of that original locality long before I-95 ever came thru town
