Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,814 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico just east of Interstate 474 and north of St. Petersburg. The first European to visit Longwood was José de Urquiza in 1565–66 when he and his army invaded Florida as part of an effort to subdue the Seminole people who had been living there for centuries. He named the area "New Spain" after arriving there. This name stuck and was used by both Spanish and American settlers until 1821, when Florida became part of the United States and New Spain lost its status as a single state. In 1822, Captain James Kenedy founded Fort Myers near present-day Longwood with help from Governor Manuel Escobar y Navarro. In 1840, Anna Maria Keyes founded Pinellas Countyseat (then known as Clearwater) about northeast of Longwood on what is now US 176; this county seat remained active until 1959 when it was moved to Tampa Bay due to growing population density in that area). Kenedy built two more forts: one at Islamorada (present-day Marathon) in 1845 and another at Apollo Beach (now Clearwater) in 1850. In 1861 US 1 was rerouted through longstreet which crossed Bulls Head Necklace Road near present day Joe's Ferry before continuing northwestward along Pinellas County Line into St Petersburg proper; this made Longwood an agricultural center rather than an industrial one like nearby Port Saint Lucie or Clearwater which were becoming increasingly commercialized The first post office opened in Longwood on September 12, 1886; it operated under the name “Pinellas” until 1888 when it changed its name to “Longwood” after President Grover Cleveland . The Dutch began to import coffee from Africa in the 16th century and by 1795, coffee had spread to Europe. Coffee started being exported to Asia in the 18th century and by 1830, it was being exported to North America. By 1850, coffee had reached England and within a few years, it had become a national drink in that country.

Longwood is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Longwood" comes from a white man who settled there in 1839 and named it for his plantation on Long Island Sound. The area that now comprises Longwood was first inhabited by the Apalachee people. A group of Seminoles had also been living there for some time before that. In 1836, Englishman William Brown founded what would become Longwood Plantation on what is now known as Bay Street in present-day Longwood. Brown became one of the earliest white men to live permanently in Florida and he soon started trading with Indians and selling goods to them from his plantation. In 1840, he married Anna Jarvis, daughter of Major George Jarvis of Tampa Bay County (later Hillsborough County). Anna's father had been killed when they were young and she took up residence with her mother at Brownsville on their plantation after their father's death. Anna later married Capt Elisha Bogue, an American Revolutionary War veteran who owned another plantation near St Petersburg called Fort Bogue (now part of Clearwater). In 1849, Captain John Hickey purchased Brownsville from Anna Jarvis for $1,500 cash which he used to purchase land east of Bay Street including what is now Olde Towne Square in downtown Longwood. Captain Hickey named his new community after himself – John Hickey's Key – which may be why it has the nickname "John Hickey's Key." By 1850, most residents in old Captain John Hickey Key had moved away or died; only a few remaining families remained until 1860 when James Wofford bought property adjacent to Bay Street from Captain John Hickey for $5 per acre (the current site of downtown). When James Wofford died childless in 1863–64, his widow sold all remaining land within Mrs Wofford's right-of-way to General David Poe during Reconstruction period giveaways program administered by Florida Department of Commerce under provisions made by Congress during American Civil War era efforts to provide self-reliant African Americans with access to education and opportunities denied them under Union rule In 1865–66 Confederate soldier Isaac Watts arrived at longwoodssite while serving as guard at local fortifications; upon learning about longwoods location through army intelligence sources he decided it must be a place where black soldiers could go free so offered money instead for stockings & clothing needed for escape & freedom & also donated land near fortifications homely named 'Piney Woods' then Purchased lots Nos 1 thru 4 adjoining Piney Woods lot @ $10 each
In 1892, Longwood became the first university in the state of Florida. It was founded by George Washington Long and his wife Julia. The school moved to its current location on a campus that was donated by Captain James W. Kirkpatrick in 1911. In 1954, it became part of the University of Miami system and in 1968, it merged with the University of West Florida to become one large university.
