Lynn Haven is a small town in the Miami-Dade County, Florida metropolitan area. It was settled by English colonists in 1836 and named for the Haven River, which flows through it. The town has since grown to encompass a population of over 10,000 people. Lynn Haven is located on the eastern bank of the Miami River and is bordered by Kendall Park to the north, Doral Gardens to the south, Brickell Heights to the west and Bywater Marina to the east. The river forms its eastern border with Miami Lakes. The first European settlers in this area were merchants from London who arrived in 1836 as part of Spain's American colony system. They established trading posts along what would become known as "the river corridor." In 1840, they founded Lynnhaven Village on land now occupied by Brickell Avenue. The village became an incorporated municipality in 1903. A courthouse was built there in 1909 and served as court house until 1974 when it was moved to Coral Gables. In 1915, Lynnhaven School was opened as one of two schools serving students from all parts of Miami-Dade County (the other being Broward High School). It continued serving students through 1912 when it closed due to financial difficulties; however, it reopened under new management that year and continues operating today as a public school with grades PreK-12th grade. In 1966, after years of discussion between various community groups about developing a commercial district within town limits, Lyn Haven Landing was developed on what had been farmland near downtown Lynnhaven Village; this development is now home to shopping malls such as One Southcenter Mall and Saks Fifth Avenue Store at Herald Square mall. In 1984 UptownLynnhaven Inc., an economic development organization composed of local businessmen chaired by Mayor James Meckel began planning for annexation of portions of Kendall Park adjoining downtown Lynnhaven Village for use as upscale housing developments; these plans were abandoned after objections from residents who argued that their neighborhoods remained intact without any change or addition while Uptownlynnhaven inc.) took place adjacentTo their homes while making changes inside their neighborhoods without their consent or knowledge
