Lynn Haven is a small town in Miami-Dade County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the South Florida megaregion and forms the eastern border of Miami-Dade County. The first recorded reference to Lynn Haven was in 1604 when it was called "Haven" after a nearby body of water. In 1702, Captain John Smith visited the area and noted that he saw "a great bayou emptying into a river which ran by this place". In 1762, during the French and Indian War, British forces burned down several villages in what is now Lynn Haven due to an order from General James Oglethorpe. In 1821, Dutchman Joris van der Valk founded a village on present day Doña Ana River Boulevard near downtown Miami. He named it Nieuw Amsterdam (New Amsterdam). After his death in 1827, his wife served as the village's first female township trustee until her death in 1830. The village continued to be governed by her husband's widow until 1851 when it became part of Miami Township under President James Kenedy's Order No. 25 dated March 3, 1851 which designated all parts of metropolitanMiami as townships with their own board of supervisors; except for Lynn Haven which remained unincorporated withinMiami Township boundaries until 1906 when it became part of Miami-Dade County as one unit.
