Lynn Haven is a small town in Escambia County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pensacola-Fernando de la Hoya Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European to visit Lynn Haven was Captain John Smith on his ill-fated voyage in 1565. The area that now includes Lynn Haven was originally occupied by the Timucua Indians and later acquired by Spanish colonists as part of the Province of Florida. In 1763, during the French and Indian War, British forces burned down many of the coastal homes in what is now Lynn Haven after capturing Fort Brooke on Pensacola Bay. In 1819, President James K. Polk sent US Marines to Sebastian Key to quash a slave uprising there – one of only a few times such an event took place in Florida during Polk’s presidency. Commodore James Cook sailed into Pensacola Bay on July 29th, 1819 with USS Constitution under Rear Admiral David Dixon Porter for an exploratory mission including visits to both Mobile Bay and Lake Monroe; Lynn Haven was not visited by either vessel but it became known as “Cook’s Harbor” due to its proximity to that venue. On October 5th., 1821 Lieutenant Colonel George Aitken landed 600 men at Red Bank without warning or provocation from any quarter and began plundering local houses – an event which later led to Aitken being called “the Father of Seminole Wars” because he had violated Indian land rights so egregiously. Aftermath included over 100 civilian casualties (90% women and children) compounded by widespread destruction caused by bombardment from shore batteries ashore subsequent weeks resulting in loss of life/property valued at $150 thousand dollars ($ million today). Alongshore batteries were also constructed at this time but their use did not commence until after Aitken withdrew his troops from Red Bank on December 8th., 1821 making it all too clear that these fortifications had no legal justification whatsoever other than providing military intimidation against local residents who had nothing whateverto do with those hostilities! In 1865, following Confederate victory at Appomattox Court House Governor Andrew Johnson established military reservation along Pensacola Bayou just outside present day Lynn Haven limits where white farmers were given exclusive access while black African Americans were forced onto reservations elsewhere within present day Escambia County area.(See: Emancipation Proclamation) As domestic coal production expanded throughout much of Southeast America during Reconstruction following the Civil War various miners began entering Florida looking for work rather than remaining behind closed doors awaiting shipment back home(See: Lynching Of Negroes In America 1865-1877) Consequently several mills located close enough to provide transportation (e.g.: WPW Mill & Sawmill), sponge mine operations commenced near present day Citrusville(see: Citrusville Historical Society website), dredging season ensued creating a serious navigational hazard for vessels trying enter/exit Gulfstream Channel; generator sets were running constantly evening/morning when seeking passage through dangerous waters off aid buoy #2 became common practice for crew members awaiting embarkation/disembarkation as engine power failed soon after landfall; firearms were openly carried aboard vessels daily prior to arrival & continued carriage once ashore despite numerous warnings from Coast Guard personnel captain Waddell reported incidents involving drunken sailors using knives etc.; however little if any action was taken against this problem largely due gunboats patrolled bayou nightly conducting boarding operations resulted in convictionsewith fewIf any punishment meted out owing primarily to political factorsrather then lack thereof……….Lynchhaven experienced some growth starting around 1900 whenilled acres began becoming available thanks partly theretofore undeveloped areas north side street grid alignment changed bringing more development closer becomes town limits….. By 1910 population reached 2,500 people…………..most notable development occurred during World War II when many new businesses started up contributing greatly To economic stability post-war……………Today community has approximately 1,800 citizens………………………………………………………………………..
The Lynn Haven area was originally a Seminole Indian village. The first white person to live in the area was Colonel John Stevens, who arrived in 1795. He built a small fort on the side of a hill and named it Fort Stevens after himself. The fort served as a trading post for several years until it was transferred to the British in 1802. In 1803, American General Andrew Jackson invaded Florida and during his march through the state he passed through Lynn Haven on his way to Tallahassee. When he reached Lynn Haven, he ordered all supplies stop at the fort and distributed them among his troops. After taking Tallahassee, Jackson retreated back into Florida and never came back to Florida again. The fortifications at Fort Stevens were destroyed by fire in 1814 and no longer have any practical use today.
