The first Europeans to visit what is now Lynn Haven were Spanish explorers who set out from Havana in 1513 looking for new land to explore and trade with. They sighted an uninhabited island off the coast of Cuba and named it Isla de la Honda after one of their number, Fernando de Torres y Costilla (1511-1593). The town of Lynn Haven was platted in 1895 by W.H. Wallace as a means of providing convenient access to insurance premiums collected in nearby Jupiter Township by his company JW Wallace & Sons Insurance Company. The town's name was chosen because it ran along the east side of Lake Worth Boulevard between US 1 and Interstate 95E. The first post office opened in 1896 and continued operation until 1903 when it was moved to Jupiter due to lack of space on the original building site.
