Lynn Haven is a census-designated place located in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 9,716 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town began as a small farming community and grew to be an agricultural center during the early 1900s. Lynn Havenyers produced cotton, soybeans, cattle, eggs and other crops until the late 1940s when it became an industrial center with production of shipbuilding materials and plastics. The post-World War II period saw a growth in businesses such as restaurants and convenience stores which led to increased traffic on local roads and increased demand for housing development around town. In recent years there has been a resurgence of old-time agriculture with acreage being leased for planting corn, beans and other vegetables; however this activity faces challenges due to changes in global market conditions. Lynn Haven was founded by John Lynch in 1892 as a small farming community near what is now Monroe City Beach on the Stonington Canal Towpath outside Jacksonville proper. By 1912, Lynch had built a store and begun to sell produce from his farmstead along Highway 2 south of town. The first telephone line arrived in Lynn Haven in 1922; by 1929 there were four churches serving the community with chapels also built that same year; another store opened up soon afterward and served as the nucleus of today's commercial structure downtown (the original building still stands). Lynn Haven is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1867 by Captain James Lynn and his wife Martha as a stopping place for stagecoaches from Jacksonville to Pensacola. In 1881, it became an agricultural center with the opening of the first paved road in Florida. The town's name comes from Haven Beach on Jupiter River which used to be a site for shipbuilding and fishing until 1959 when dredging operations ended and all that remained were beach sand banks. In 1916, Haven merged with nearby Winter Garden to become one municipality. During World War II, Lynn Haven was home to more than 50 Naval Air Station Boca Raton aircraft maintenance and storage sites; these included Hangar 13 (later renamed NAS Miramar), NAS Key West, NAS Anaconda ( later called Eglin AFB), NAS White Sands Missile Range and NAS Stuart Island. In 1951-1952, the Navy built USS Ranger here; it remains standing today as part of the NRG Park naval museum complex near downtown Lynn Haven In 1957-1959 Hurricane Donna hit southern Florida causing extensive damage including loss of life from coastal flooding The community experienced another significant event when Hurricane Floyd approached within 500 miles of landfall on September 14th 1999 - just before landfall - local residents took shelter in three abandoned homes located behind Lakeside Elementary School before being evacuated safely by helicopter Residents quickly rebuilt their homes after Floyd made landfall over land he had never seen before - making this one of only two communities in America to do so successfully during an Atlantic hurricane season . Many people still live there today as well as businesses such as Subway sandwich shops which opened shortly after Floyd made landfall while also providing emergency services such as early bird tickets for hurricanes like Katrina less than 12 hours after landfall
