The military has a long and proud history in Maitland, Florida. It is no wonder that the city is home to one of the largest Army arsenals in the Southeast. The Maitland Armory was built in 1907 by Colonel S.M. Keyes as a gift to the City of Maitland for its defense needs. The armory served as a vital part of Maitland’s military infrastructure until it was closed in 1975. However, today, it remains an important part of local community life and culture. The Army Garrison Museum located at 5555 US Hwy 169 serves as a playground for children and adults alike. Here visitors can explore artillery pieces from World War I to modern day weapons systems. There are also exhibits on local history and military ceremonies related to events such as Pearl Harbor Day or Hurricane Flora. This museum is open every Saturday from 10am-3pm from May through October and Sundays from 12pm-3pm during school vacations season (April-November). Admission is free for all visitors inside the museum building and $5 for those outside the building; however, there are discounts available online at amazon dot com/militaryarmamentmuseum or at many stores within walking distance of the museum! Another fun stop when visiting Maitland is Fort Meade State Park located just east of town on US Hwy 166A near Lake Okeechobee National Wildlife Refuge. This park offers plenty of activities for kids including hiking, fishing, camping, picnics, etc.; but be sure not to miss out on their favorite attraction – go see the Military History Museum! The Maitland Army Post is the oldest military post in the state of Florida. It was first established on October 12, 1836 as Fort Maitland by Colonel James H. Kincaid, who was commanding officer of the 2nd Regiment Florida Volunteer Infantry. The present-day post is located in Maitland, near Lake Okeechobee. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Fort Maitland became part of General Joseph E. Johnston's army and garrisoned a position on Indian River between Jupiter and Kissimmee Counties. In 1865 it was reoccupied by General George Custer's army after they destroyed all bridges over the Indian River at this location. The fort was abandoned again in 1868 but reactivated in 1921 as an artillery battery for training troops prior to World War II. During World War II it served as headquarters for Third Beach Brigade which fought against German forces along the coast of North Africa and Europe. In 1946, Fort Maitland attained its current name when it became a separate military installation within the Department of Defense under what was then called "Fortifications Command". Maitland is a small town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,834 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Maitland was founded in 1892 by John Maitland and his wife Emma (née Morris). The couple named their town after their two children: Mary (born 1893) and James (1895). In 1899, they added another daughter to the family name when they married Anna Crouse. Anna became the first woman to be elected as Mayor of Maitland in 1949. She held that position until her death in 1957. In 1972, Anna's husband John Crouse Sr., who had been mayor from 1951-1957, was elected Governor of Florida, serving until he died in 1978. He was succeeded by his son John Crouse Jr., who served until 1987. Maitland has experienced many changes over its history including becoming an agricultural community with cattle production; a center for automobile manufacturing during World War II; a major shopping destination for retirees during the late 1960s and early 1970s; and being home to several universities such as Stetson University and USF Trueblood School of Law before it began decline beginning in the 1990s due to loss of jobs in nearby Orlando and Tampa Bay occupations that moved to other areas such as Jacksonville or Miami Beach . However, recent economic development has led to new businesses opening up in Maitland including a Walmart supercenter open since 2006 which employs 350 people; a Masonic Lodge with more than 100 members; a large primary school on Joplin Road known as "The Big House" which opened its doors in 2007 after years of planning; an auto dealership which reopened its doors on December 12th 2009 after undergoing renovations costing $1 million dollars; hospital facility operated by Baptist Health Care System which opened on October 3rd 2010 with 130 beds.; A high school dubbed "Homeschooled Heaven" near Main Street off I-1 south also offers education through homework assistance services while still providing access to physical education opportunities for students.; Village Park located across from Interstate 4 Snohomish Boulevard provides public transportation options into town from different neighborhoods within Maitland ; As well as several restaurants local favorite haunts like Golden Corral BBQ & Brewpub & Pie Place are located throughout town making it easy for visitors to find what they're looking for without leaving their car parked outside multiple stores
When the United States first entered World War I in 1917, they had no army. The country was still under Spanish rule and there was no way for American soldiers to fight in the war. But on April 6, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson announced that the United States would become a military superpower and create an American Army. On November 4, 1918, Congress authorized $130 million to be spent on the new army and it was created as a separate branch of government on December 12, 1918. The American Army became operational on January 15th 1919. By 1922, the American Army had grown to over 100,000 troops and by 1929 it totaled 1 million men. The U.S. Army fought throughout World War II but emerged victorious after defeat in 1945 at the hands of Nazi Germany. After World War II ended, the United States disbanded its army but kept many of its units active until 1949 when they were finally disbanded as part of overall U.S.-Soviet peacekeeping efforts in Europe following Stalin’s victory over Harry Truman’s America in Helsinki Accords

Maitland, Florida is located in Panhandle County and was founded by English colonists in 1824. The town of Maitland received its name from General James Wilkinson, who named it for his friend Colonel John Hawkins Maitland. In 1836, the community added a post office to its name and soon became a center of agricultural production in the region. After being hit hard by the Panic of 1837, Maitland bounced back with growth thanks to its manufacturing industry and other businesses that sprang up around the town. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, Maitland experienced a period of growth as many went into business there due to its fertile soils and nearby water resources. However, during World War II much of what made Maitland such an important node in Florida's defense base was destroyed; however, since then it has regained some of its former glory as a bedroom community for Gainesville.
Maitland was first settled in 1827 by three men, John Maitland, James Maitland and Nicholas Maitland. The town was named after the man who founded it, Nicholas Maitland. In 1869, the town became a county seat and remained so until 1933. It is currently an unincorporated community located in Polk County.
