Maitland is a census-designated place in Pasco County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater metropolitan area. Maitland is located near Hillsborough and Pinellas counties on Pensacola Bay. The first settler in Maitland was Captain John Huggins who arrived in 1795. He named his new land "Hillsborough" after his home county of Yorkshire, England. In 1813 Colonel Nathaniel Peebles built a house on what is now Center Street in Maitland and began trading with traders from Georgia and Alabama. In 1834 Captain Wm Fenton discovered oil shale near present day Maitland when he drove his horses over a rock outcrop that had been overlooked by earlier exploration teams. The discovery led to the town's early boom period which included the founding of three schools: Hillsborough Female Academy (1835), Fenton Male Academy (1836), and State Normal School (1838). By 1840 there were over 100 people living in Maitland although it still lacked any commercial development aside from shipbuilding and fishing until 1850 when Captains George King, James Buchanan, and Hiram Bowen founded Jacksonville Shipbuilding Company to build steamboats for commercial shipping around Tampa Bay. During World War II most residents worked as naval seamen or in local factories producing war materials such as airplane parts or tanks while others took up farming after the war ended. In 1955 Maitland became an incorporated municipality with its own government; this marked the beginning of its recent growth as a residential community without significant commercial activity until more recently due to its proximity to Tampa’s job market including many high tech companies headquartered there since 2005
