Maitland is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,541 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Miami metropolitan area. Maitland is located on U.S. Route 27 and State Road 436 about southeast of Kissimmee and northwest of Ocala. The first settler in Maitland was George Hargrave who platted the town in 1851. The name "Maitland" originated from a Cherokee word meaning "place where no one lives." In 1881, John Ladd purchased 160 acres (67 hectares) of land east of Maitland for $2,000 from David Swain who had purchased it from the Creek Indian tribe for $8 per acre. Ladd donated his land to the town for free in 1886 as a way to keep farmers and settlers away from his valuable timber holdings near Kissimmee. At that time, there were only three homes in Maitland- all built by Ladd himself- one on Main Street and two on Church Street. In 1903, he donated another 160 acres (67 hectares) east of Maitland to make room for new housing development which would eventually become known as "OldTown." He also bought 100 acres (40 hectares) south of OldTown in 1912 which became known as "LakeMall." In 1907, Drury Pritchett opened Eastern General Hospital in Maitland which functioned until 1971 when it was closed due to budget cuts by then Governor Bob Grahams administration. That same year saw the opening of First Baptist Church which served as the community's main worship center until it too was closed in 1978 due to budget restrictions by then Mayor Buddy Dyer after Hurricane Andrew destroyed much of downtown Kissimmee). In 1911, Jens Jensen started farming what would become known as "Jensen Farms". Today Jensen Farms still operates as a commercial dairy farm with over 1 million gallons (3 million litres) harvested annually statewide since its inception The original post office operated from 1885 through 1898 under postal code 714 before being moved to its present location next door to First Baptist Church . On July 20th 1913 US Highway 27 was designation along with other state highways during Project Verde Roads statehood ceremonies – making way for more rural traffic relief following passage by Congress earmarked for that purpose . Maitland was founded in 1867 by John Maitland and his family. The town grew quickly, with a population of over 800 people in 1900. By the 1960s, Maitland had become an agricultural center with a strong industrial presence. In the 1990s, the town lost its textile production and employment to rural areas throughout Florida. Today, Maitland is home to a small collection of businesses and several hundred residents who commute to jobs in Tallahassee or Jacksonville. John Maitland was born in 1821 in Scotland and arrived in Florida in 1845 as part of the initial wave of immigrants who arrived during the Era of Seminole Wars. He worked on a plantation before moving to what is now Maitland in 1867. John’s son, James A., also came to Florida and soon established himself as a prosperous landowner and civic leader. James A. Maitland Jr.'s son, John W., married Anna Maria Diskin (née Hickey) on November 2, 1865 at Stonington Presbyterian Church located near present-day Gulfport/Moultrie Airport. AnnaMaria was from County Clare, Ireland and immigrated to America when she was just 16 years old; her brother had already done so two years earlier! They were later joined by their children: Donald (1868-1937), Gladys (1870-1949), Maurice (1872-1941), Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (1928-2006), Alice Fenton (b 1935) and Brendan Foley (b 1942). John W."Maire"Maitland Sr.'s death left AnnaMaria's children guardianless since they could not take legal custody of him after he died without leaving any assets behind. In 1907 AnnaMaria's granddaughter Mildred became guardian ad litem for all three children under age 21 since there could be no one else appointed as such by law due to their father's lack of estate assets at that time! Unfortunately for all concerned with this situation within months after his death Mildred sadly passed away unmarried at the age of 71 years old!! AnnaMaria Diskin died unmarried at 71 years old after her husband John W."Maire"Maitland Sr.'s death without leave or assets left behind
Maitland was founded in 1836 by Captain James Maitland and his brother, Colonel John Maitland. The town is located on the banks of the Kissimmee River, east of Lake County. In 1840, the Maitlands built a log cabin on their property which served as the center of town until it burned down in 1851. In 1865, the first post office was opened in Maitland. By 1870, there were 11 businesses inMaitland with a population of 317 residents. The town saw its heyday during Reconstruction when many jobs opportunities were available for citizens due to the lack of infrastructure at that time. After Reconstruction ended in 1877, Maitland declined and had only 6 businesses remaining by 1880. Many residents left after disagreements over taxes and government spending led to economic decline and poverty within the community until it was renamed Kissimmee in 1904.
