Maitland, Florida is home to the world's first coffee roasting company. The coffee industry was founded in Maitland by Nicholas Roan and his brother-in-law, John Fenton in 1892. In 1897, the brothers opened their own grocery store on Main Street in Maitland and began selling coffee. They soon became known for their high quality beans and roastable cups of coffee. In 1912, Nicholas Roan moved the company from Maitland to Fort Myers, Florida where it continued to operate until 1914. In that year, Nicholas Roan's son and successor, J.B. Roan took over operations of the business. At JB Roan's death in 1922, the business passed through several families before it was acquired by George Peake in 1951. Peake operated the company until 1978 when it was sold to James Daughtry who reopened the store under its current name in 1984. In 1990, Daughtry donated all of his profits from the store's sale back into the company as a gift to future generations. Maitland, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 797 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area. Maitland was founded as a cattle and sheep station on October 21, 1838 by George W. Maitland and his brother James A. Maitland. The two brothers were acting Deputy Sheriff of Hillsborough County when they opened the station. Maitland became an agricultural center with growing dairy and hog production until the early 20th century when clothmaking became more important to the town's economy due to its location on Tampa Bay's shallow waters near Clearwater Harbor. The post office at Maitland was first established on February 14, 1840; it was moved to its present location in 1861 after being destroyed by a fire in Hernando County (now Pinellas). The first school in Maitland was built in 1853; it closed in 1915 because of budget cuts during World War I. In 1925, Maitland Municipal Airport opened for commercial use following land purchase from JB Hunt Corporation and development by Harry Laughlin and Partners which included aircraft manufacturing facilities for Eglin Field Air National Guard Base(now Fort Walton Beach Air National Guard Base) then Tallahassee AFB before becoming an airport operated by Everglades Regional Airport Authority since 1969 until privatization of Everglades Regional Airport Authority in 2006 . In 1953, George W. Maitland Jr., grandson of George Wm., founded Pioneer Land Company which developed over one million acres (4 km2) of citrus groves across central Florida beginning with Citrus Heights nearOrlando until eventually selling most or all of this property to Citrus Tree Farms Incorporated (CTF) who are now based out of Melbourne Beach.. CTF remains one of only two landowners remaining contiguous with Orlando & Sanford within Orange county classified as Agricultural land holding company/ranch - other notable examples include Stonington Ranch Co (Sunshine State), Brevard Co (Northwest Fla.), Hillcrest Estates Co Palm Coast FL , Winter Park Racetrack Corp Christmas Manor Rd Winter Park FL . CTF has also been involved heavily with tree planting throughout Orlando - primarily citrus but including palm trees etc... One significant issue that has arisen from their ownership is how best to manage their various holdings environmentally given changing conditions such as high water levels caused by climate change etc... Maitland, Florida was founded on December 12th, 1859 by John Maitland and his wife, Lillie. The town was named after the woman who originated the idea for it. The first business in Maitland was a post office. In 1865, the name of the town was changed to Maitland Landing to honor Commodore James A. Cook who had donated land for the settlement. On October 3rd, 1889, Maitland Landing became a city and is still home to most of its residents today.
