Maitland, Florida is a small town located in Pasco County, Florida. The population was 2,639 at the 2010 census. Maitland is named after General James Maitland who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as governor of Florida. The first settlers in what would become Maitland were farmers and their families who arrived from northern England in the early 1800s. By 1825, there were about 25 people living in what is now Maitland. The original courthouse was built on present day Highway 3 near the intersection of Old US 12 and Cherry Street. In 1868, state legislator John Auld founded the agricultural college at Blind River which became Hillsborough State Agricultural College (later renamed Tampa State University). In 1902, it merged with Hillsborough State Normal School to form Tampa State University which continues to be a mainstay of education in Maitland today. In 1925, Bay News Service moved its headquarters from New York City to Tampa and began using its new building on Garnet Avenue across from TAMU’s campus. Today, Bay News Service remains one of America’s most famous news organizations and their presence has not been matched by any other city or county throughout history! In 1927 during World War II, Governor Bob Holtzclaw ordered all businesses statewide closed for 4 days so that Floridians could contribute $5 per day to support the war effort. Many local residents turned out to help bake thousands of loaves of bread that were distributed free to soldiers stationed nearby! During WWII many jobs went offshore due to scarce labor resources in mainland United States but Floridians stood strong through tough times by manufacturing key military items including airplanes and artillery cannons! After WWII many locals decided they wanted their own community - this led to the establishment of Maitland as an incorporated town on November 15th 1959! It took nearly 20 years for oursmall town population growth rate below 1%. However thanks largely to some great leadership over time we have seen a reverse migration back into our Community over recent years culminating with us having an increase of 2% growth Rate last year alone! Despite this slower pace however overall population growth has definitely slowed down significantly since 2000 when we had an increase of 5%
Maitland is located inDuval County, Florida. It was founded by Capt. John Maitland on November 7, 1836 as a small farming community named for him. The town became a major center of citrus production and commerce in the early 1900s. In 1925, Maitland merged with nearby Clearwater to form the Cities of Clearwater and Maitland Combined Statistical Area.
