Maitland, Florida is a small town in Polk County, Florida. The population was 2,624 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Maitland's history can be traced back to 1852 when it was called "Milton". Maitland was originally settled by Europeans on what is now known as Fort Myers Beach Boulevard and other areas near the present-day intersection of US 1 and Snook Road. As early as 1851, Maitland had a post office. At that time there were only two homes in the community and no businesses; citizens relied almost entirely on agriculture for their income. In 1865, a group of Methodist missionaries founded Wofford College in nearby Winter Garden and began teaching students from Maitland. In 1870, they moved the college to Tallahassee after purchase of land by Edwin Gentry II who served as governor of Florida at that time. The college continued to operate until 1934 when it merged with Stetson University to form Tallahassee–Stetson University (now Florida State University). The first school building in Maitland opened in 1872 on what is now US 1 south of State Road 57A/State Road 625 west of I-95/SR 527 north of SR 714 (the current location). That building served until 1925 when another school building was erected on what is now SR 527 east off I-95 northeast of downtown Jacksonville. That building served until 1957 when another school building was erected on what are now Race Street and NW Fourth Avenue NE in Jacksonville proper (the present location). That building also served until 1975 when it closed due to budgetary constraints within then-Governor Lawton Chiles' administration following state budget cuts during his final year in office. That same year saw the opening of an outdoor shopping mall located just northwestward alongsnook road between I-95/SR 527 Business Loop and SW Eighth Avenue SE which became known variously as "The Mall", "Rancho Park Plaza" or simply "The mall." It quickly emerged as one of Jacksonville's most popular tourist destinations with its large selectionof stores including several major department stores including JCPenney, Sears, Macy's and Dillards among others as well as several smaller stores alongsnook roadbetween SR 714 /I-95 Business Loop & SW Eighth Ave SE; today still known colloquially as The Mall! It hosted many annual events such as Christmas lights displays throughout the season culminating with an event held annually over New Year's weekend featuring live music from local bandshells across town sponsored by JC Penney which typically featured gift items from that store alone!

Maitland, Florida is located in the panhandle of Florida and has been a part of the United States since 1821. The town was founded in 1834 by John Maitland and his wife, Ann. At that time, it was the most northerly settlement in Florida. In 1840, Maitland donated land to create what is now downtown Maitland. In 1916, the town became one of five cities in Seminole County when it was split from Sanford. The population decreased after World War II as many farmers moved away to metropolitan areas. However, development has resumed with new housing projects and businesses being built throughout downtown Maitland.
Maitland, Florida was founded on December 22, 1838 by Captain John Maitland and his wife Caroline. The town was named for the meadow at the mouth of the St. Johns River where they first set up their trading post. In 1839, Captain Maitland and his family moved to Fort Myers, Florida to take over a military post there. They started a new school in 1840 and began to grow the community by farming land and becoming involved in local commerce. On February 11, 1845, Captain Maitland's son-in-law James A. Macomb married Caroline Maitland and accepted her dowry of $5,000 dollars plus stock in a new company called The First National Bank of Fort Myers. This event marked the beginning of an important friendship between Father James A. Macomb andCaptain John Maitland that would continue until Macomb's death in 1886. In 1847 Colonel Benjamin Bogue built a depot on Railroad Street in what is now downtown Maitland which became an important stop for travelers travelling eastbound on Highway 192 from Ft Myers to Jacksonville or westbound on Highway 1 from Jacksonville to Tampa Bay
