Maitland is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. It was founded in 1892 by John Maitland and his wife, Sarah. The town is named after General James MacArthur, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The MacArthurs settled in what is now Maitland after moving from Fort Myers, Florida. A post office was established at Maitland in 1893 and remained in operation until 1906. In 1911, the name of the town was changed to honor General MacArthur's son, James MacArthur Jr., who had been born there that year. Maitland experienced some growth during World War II as it became an important supply depot for the war effort. The community saw heavy use during the Battle of Leyte Gulf and other campaigns throughout the war. After the war, Maitland slowly declined as businesses relocated away and its population dwindled to around 100 people by 1970. However, over time it has regained some of its lost ground with a current population of around 150 people. Maitland is still home to a few active businesses including General Motors Dealership (which closed down in 1998), Barnes & Noble bookstore chain (which moved out of business in 2009), and several local restaurants including Cafe del Mar and Mission Chinese Restaurant. In addition to its small grocery store and two churches, Maitland also features one public library which serves as a social center for residents and their pets; three convenience stores; two banks; four schools - four elementary grades through high school - all operated by Hillsborough County School District No 2; two golf courses - Proctor Farms Golf Course off US Highway 1A about five miles east of town on Proctor Lane) ; six rental houses; threeatta water park ; shopping mall - Wal-Mart Supercenter ; four bowling alley complexes (the largest being Hooters Country Club ); one pool - Nine Lakes Water Park
