Maitland is a town in Citrus County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando– Kissimmee–Hollywood metropolitan area. The first European to visit Maitland was Captain James Cook on his ill-fated HMS "Endeavour" in 1774. Maitland had been founded by Capt. John Sitton in 1855 as a small community on the banks of the St Johns River just south of present day Silver Springs. In 1912, parts of Maitland were annexed by nearby Orange City and renamed Orangeburg; while some residents kept their original name and incorporated into Orangeburg, most chose to change their names to ensure they would have an orange-colored community within Citrus County's boundaries. In January 1925, Maitland became a city when it annexed portions of neighboring Unincorporated Volusia and Placid Counties; this action combined with similar annexations from Winter Haven and Bradford before 1959 made Maitland one of the largest cities in Florida history at the time. In 1957, Floridians voted overwhelmingly to end Reconstruction following World War II and establish statehood for both Seminole and Georgia counties - achieving this goal by referendum on November 3 that year. However, many African American citizens living in Citrus County decided not to move away after being forced out during Rededication hearings chaired by then Governor Talmadge Harrison (R). The decision not to leave led some white citizens who wanted citrus production moved inland while others built new homes around what was left of downtown Maitland – today known as Old Town – which remains one of its primary attractions. Maitland is a town in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa–St Petersburg–Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. Maitland was founded by Captain Alexander McNaught Maitland on April 11, 1836 as a trading post on the Monckton River. In 1838, Maitland became part of the Seminole Indian Wars and was burned by Seminole leader Osceola in what is now called Maitland Park. In 1865, Maitland was established as a village under name "Ft Worth". It lost its charter to become an incorporated municipality in 1912. On December 5, 1912 it merged with neighboring Clearwater to form Maitland-Clearwater Township (established 1907). On November 3, 1916, during World War I Battle of Saint Philip's Bay Near Fort Myers Beach (now known as Cape Coral), Australian forces troops from Company C 9th Battalion First Australian Imperial Force (AIF) were attacking German positions along the coast near Fort Myers Beach when they came across two American soldiers who had been captured by Germans during the battle and were being held captive. Lieutenant Colonel Cyril Durney ordered his unit to surrender without further ado and all but one soldier surrendered including Private John Hargrave who later died from his injuries at a hospital in Australia after more than three months captivity. This event is known as TheBattleOfFort MyersBeach or Katoomba for short. Aftermath of this battle saw many changes within both nations with Australians taking pride in their accomplishments while Americans felt shame and humiliation

Maitland was named for Colonel George Maitland, an American general who fought in the Mexican-American War and served as governor of Florida from 1841 to 1843. Maitland was hit hard by Hurricane Andrew in 1992, which destroyed many homes and businesses. The town has since made significant progress, thanks in part to its partnership with Citrus County government and its commitment to economic development. In 2006, Maitland became the first municipality in Citrus County to receive a grant from the StateofFlorida Economic Development Authority (EDA). This funding will help support local businesses through market research and development initiatives.
