In 1945, a group of civilian volunteers from Maitland formed a Women’s Auxiliary Air Force (WAAF) squadron to provide airlift services for troops fighting in Japan. This was one of the first times that women had been given access to an arm of the military. With additional support from members of the community, WAAF squadron became operational by September 1946. By then, Maitland had become home to two Air Force stations: RAF Maitland and US Navy base at Clearwater Bay. During World War II, many civilians donated items such as clothes, tools and equipment to help soldiers fight effectively and efficiently. In addition, businesses within townoperated military posts contributed goods or services such as fuel or ammunition storage facilities during wartime operations. Maitland is a small town in Duval County, Florida. The population was 1,959 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville Metropolitan Statistical Area. Maitland is located on US-91 south of Jacksonville and east of St. Petersburg. Interstate 495 runs through the center of town and exits to the north near Lake Worth Boulevard. According to the United States Census Bureau, Maitland has a total area of , all land. The Maitland post office was established in 1892 and closed in 1984. The village's first school was built in 1903 by Mrs. Anna Pritchard and operated as a one-room school until 1927 when it became an annex for the more comprehensive North Memorial Schoolhouse also in North Memorial Avenue and served grades K-8 until 1943 when it became an independent school with its own building which still uses that name today (grades 9-12). In 1925, Maitland developed its first two streets: Indian Lane to the east and West Park Drive to the west were named after military generals or pioneer settlers who had made early contributions to Maitland including General John Wesley Hill (1801-1872), Colonel James Polk (1846-1925) and Drury Henningson (1793-1864). These street names are still used today along with other local landmarks like Mount Pleasant Cemetery which occupies much of what used to be called Indian Lane; Sunrise Point Golf Course which includes both championship holes as well as practice greens; Brown's Marina where you can find launch ramps for fishing boats; Lighthouse Point where there once was a lighthouse moored next door to now sit several homes; Agricultural Road which ran behind most of Maitland before becoming part of I-4 95.; The community hall opened in 1951 on Enterprise Street across from Old High School Whyte (). It served as both public library while also serving as an outlet for local artists during their shows at that time since many residents did not have access to better facilities then what they had back home.. In 1984, due to budget cuts, only 2% of mltd's properties were kept up/keepable such as sidewalks, roofs/lights etc., while property values increased 5%. In spite however of these challenges many residents keep active locally by participating in various organizations ranging from Rotary Neighbors Club lunches every Tuesday morning throughout summertime into fall term season when social events happen typically around Harvest Festivals etc.; involved too are numerous businesses such as Applebees restaurants hereabouts catering mostly towards tourists but they usually do not carry food items out into town anymore because demand has dropped off markedly since 2007 when hurricanes Irma & Maria hit leaving Duval County without power & likelyDestroying any business that relied upon tourism dollars - this has really hurt our economy overall although we continue tryin' hard thruout 2018 elecion season
