The National Guard of Florida was activated in 1941. The first members of the Guard were drafted into service in 1940 and 1941 as part of the Selective Service System. The Guard was organized on December 15, 1941 by Governor James M. Cox and Lieutenant Colonel Arthur M. Gates, Jr. The Guardsmen were mobilized for two months in November and December 1941 to help with World War II mobilization efforts. On January 6, 1942, the President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 9147 which provided for a permanent appropriation of $4 million dollars for the development and deployment of a military system within state government called the Florida National Guard orGuard Forces as authorized by Section 502(a) (1) of Public Law 992-A known as The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1945 (Public Law No 91-408). This act created Florida’s first army reserve unit whereas before it had been an air force reserve unit activated under Title 10 U.S.C., Section 303(a). As authorized by section 503(b), national guard units are not subject to federal military recruiting regulations and may be enlisted or mustered into active duty in any number not exceeding 100 percent full time commitment without loss of civil service rights or privileges incident thereto; however they are subject to all State militia laws and regulations related thereto including those governing Officers Cadet Training so long as their enlistment is limited to 3 years at most with no possibility that they will reach the rank or status above that required for membership in a Regular Army organization The 2nd Battalion, 5th Regiment, Florida National Guard was activated on February 14, 1942 at Fort Pierce Beach from Citizens Reserve Company A 4th Infantry Regiment formerly commanded by Captain Homer Jantz who served during World War II The 1st Battalion (Alaska) Infantry Regiment was activated on May 17th at Pearl Harbor from Companies E 8th Infantry Regiment also formerly commanded by Captain Homer Jantz who served during World War II On July 21st Headquarters Company - 334th Infantry Brigade Commander Lieutenant Colonel George Catton relieved Captain John Prentice effective immediately due to ill health On October 18 th Headquarters Company - 335th Infantry Brigade Commander Lieutenant Colonel Harry Sink relieved Lieutenant Colonel George Catton effective immediately due toill health

Maitland is a small town in central Florida, about 25 miles south of Tampa. It was founded in 1836 by General Andrew Jackson as a plantation and post office called "Maitland." The name change to Maitland after the arrival of Captain John Maitland, who landed there on July 12, 1836 with his vessel, the brig "John Quincy Adams." After landing he named the settlement for himself: Maitland Plantation. The first settlers were Methodist ministers from South Carolina. In 1840, the population of Maitland was 255; by 1860 it had grown to 1,128. The town's growth was helped by its location at the intersection of two major wagon roads that connected Tampa and Jacksonville. Over time, Maitland became known for its fruit crops and cattle prodigious herds of horse and cattle. In 1907, when railroad service arrived in MaitLAND (later renamed Tampa), more people started moving into the community because of its close proximity to jobs on the new line. Today, much of what made Maitlands early days so prosperous has been lost to development; however, some aspects such as its pedestrian-friendly downtown square and high school remain vibrant attractions. Today’s residents are diverse in their religions – Christianity is predominant but there are also sizable numbers of Muslims and Hindus – as well as their occupations including many truck drivers and mechanics who work at nearby hospitals or local businesses. This act also mandated that all Guardsmen must maintain their uniform and weapons at all times while on duty or during training exercises. After World War I ended, many soldiers returned home from Europe with injuries or no experience whatsoever when it came to combatting fascism or communism back at home - this lack of experience led some veterans to form militias instead of joining up with regular units because they felt like they had nothing left to give back home (Frost). Another problem during this time was that many Americans were not well-versed in geopolitics so they didn’t understand how their country could benefit from alliances and partnerships with other countries (Frost). Because of these factors, Congress passed The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1920 which increased funding for national guard programs yet again by $2 million dollars (Vinland). The amendment also prohibited Guardsmen from serving abroad if they did not meet specific requirements such as complete military service or passing a bar exam (Vinland). In 1924, Congress passed another amendment which repealed The National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 1920 and increased spending only by $500 thousand dollars (). Because there was still much debate about whether or not Guardsmen should serve outside their state borders, this amendment is sometimes referred to as the “Fourteen Points Amendment” (). After World War II ended, most troops were transferred out of federal service into state militias so that people could get a better understanding about what type of warfare future wars would be fought against (Frost).
