Navy gifts have been a part of the Maitland community for many years. The Naval Air Station (NAS) in Maitland is home to one of the largest and most powerful naval air forces in the world. NAS Maitland has given many local residents and military personnel items, including boatloads of new equipment, tools, supplies, and even vehicles. The Navy's gift history can be traced back to 1909 when NAS Matecumbe was established at NASMontgomery with the purchase of seven seaplanes from Japan. After World War I, NASMaitland acquired more planes and began providing services to both merchant vessels and warships. In 1942, during World War II, NASMaitland became an all-weather Naval Air Station after purchasing six P-38 Lightning aircraft from the United States Air Force. Between 1941 and 1945, NASMaitland flew over 2 million missions across Southeast Asia and Europe as part of American combat operations against Nazi Germany. In recent years, NAS Maitland has become known for its collection of boats belonging to various branches of the U.S. military; those belonging to Marine Corps units are especially noted. Many members of the MaitLAND Community have contributed their time or money towards building these vessels into valuable community assets that can be used by everyone in our community. While there is no navy gift history like there once was at NASMaitland - due in large part to advancements in technology - some notable gifts have been made by local residents/military personnel: • 1966 – The first municipally owned boat at NASMaitland was donated by Mrs. Mildred Swayze when she donated her schooner USS Coxe (LHD1)toNASMouth for use as a shelter during Hurricane Opal). • 1990 – A gift from Rear Admiral John Withers Support Squadron 1st Fleet (NAVY) marked the shelving off of "The Yard" on East Beach Boulevard where members could come ashore for repairs or alterations freeof charge while embarked on assigned ships or aircrafts underway or attached temporarily to another squadron/unit aboard an active naval vessel...the first municipal dockyard within miles...in order that NAVY sailors not having accesstothis facility would not become stranded upon returnfrom their deployment abroad...This service mark continues today at East Beach Boulevard ...and marks a significant milestonefor NASMIatlands shipbuilding capabilities which helped greatly improve wartime readinessof our fleet." Maitland is a city located in Jacksonville, Florida, United States. The population was 12,865 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville-Boca Raton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Maitland was Capt. John Crouch who arrived in 1794 and founded a small town on Hernando Island. In 1821, Captain Crouch's son Amos took over his father's business and built what would become the first hotel in Maitland. The original structure still stands today - it is currently used as a restaurant and bar called "The Commodore" by locals and visitors alike. In 1825, Jens Jensen purchased land from Captains Crouch and Fenton for $2,500. Named Maitland after his father's home country of Denmark (now Málaga), Jensen developed the area into one of the most successful agricultural settlements in Florida during this time period with his mireless land holdings totaling 432 acres (170 hectares). He also constructed several churches, schools and residences including Manor House which still stands today as one of the most iconic landmarks in town. Jensen passed away in 1853 but his legacy lives on to this day with some of his descendants continuing to operate their businesses here today including Citrus County Farms which specializes exclusively in fresh fruits and vegetables; The Commodore Bar & Grill which offers classic American cuisine; Park Place Apartments – all-day lodging option for tourists; as well as many other businesses that contribute greatly to local economies both locally and statewide. Maitland experienced its heyday during World War II when thousands of servicemen from throughout the US came through town looking for work opportunities or just to relax after combat SERVICE STATION #1 was established here in 1942 adjacent to Glynn Regional Medical Center (now Jacksonville Memorial Hospital) - quickly becoming known as "the training ground for America". Indeed, many famous military veterans have resided here such as General George Patton who lived at Manor House while he commanded Third Army during WWII; Admiral Chester Nimitz who served aboard USS West Point during WWII; General James Mattis who served two terms as Commandant of US Marine Corps Schools hieronymously nicknamed "The Drums" due to their impact on Marine Corps tactics during Operation Iraqi Freedom; former President Bill Clinton - now based at presidential home Chappaqua –and numerous others associated with politics or business within our community since then! Today, there are countless students living and workinginMaitland earning salaries not only providing support for families but also contributing materially to our economy either directly or indirectly depending on where they choose to locate: municipalities like Stonington Springs (a suburb east of downtown), Oviedo Beach/St Petersburg International Airport (southwest of downtown), Clearwater Ranchlands west of I-95 near Gulfport airport or inside Sebastian Riverfront Corporate park just east off I-75 opposite SR 92nd Street Mall
