Maitland is a town in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee– Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. Maitland is located on US Highway 1 and State Road 619 about halfway between Winter Garden and Ormond Beach. The first Europeans to visit Maitland were Dutch traders who landed there in 1659 on their way to Boca Raton. Captain John Smith also reached Maitland in 1660 while exploring the area for British colonists then under construction along the St. Johns River in South Florida. By 1795, Anna Maria Key had been founded by Colonel James Kenedy as a landing point for Spanish American land seekers searching for new routes to Cuba and Jamaica through what is now Central Florida. In 1821, Jacob Cooke established Cooke's Landing on Presque Isle Key with two ships coming into Tampa Bay each bringing freight and passengers ashore from April until October according to records kept by the U.S. Coast Guard at that time; these days only one remains standing - dubbed "Cape Canaveral" today due to its proximity to Cape Canaveral Air Force Station - which still serves as an important commercial stopover today for tourists operating over water or airliners flying into Orlando International Airport (LGA) or Sanford International Airport (SAN). In 1872, Jno Doland opened Doland's Store on First Street near present day K-Mart across from Lake Wachtman Recreation Center; this was followed by Jno's Restaurant & Tavern which became known as "Doland's". At some point after 1870s much of what we now know as Maitland was developed around First Street east of Red Lobster Point where lumberjacks would drive their loads upriver following river levees deep into mangrove swamps before returning downriver loaded with wood not just for local homeowners but also export markets such as Havana and Santiago de Cuba back home in Jacksonville, FL! At some point prior to 1890s there may have been a school built here too... whatever it may be! In 1907 when Floridians voted overwhelmingly not to annex more territory within Miami-Dade County they provided themselves with a referendum question asking if they wanted annexation of any portion of Seminole County including Maitland Township? This referendum resulted in a majority vote yes making annexation possible! The town charter was adopted on November 3rd 1912 granting residents voting rights beginning January 1st 1913! Early leaders of Maitland included Mrs.-Eleanor Sweeny who served as postmistress from 1915 until her death in 1931; Mrs.- Cora Lunsford who chaired the Ladies Auxiliary during World War II; Mrs.-Alice Livingston who served as president pro tempore from 1951 until her retirement effective December 15th 1957; Mrs.-Jenny Easley who has held office continuously since 1959 when she succeeded her retiring predecessor Mrs.-Alice Livingston uponMrs.-Eleanor Sweeny’s death; current Mayor Rick Pruett having his election victory celebration held here late last month - all while celebrating 50 years since incorporation date February 14th 1961!!! Maitland, Florida is located in the US state of Florida and is part of Miami-Dade County. The population was 96,521 at the 2010 census. It is included in the Miami-Dade metropolitan area. Maitland was founded in 1884 by Loyalists from Nova Scotia as a small community on Key West's west side. In 1911, it became an incorporated town after being chosen for its fertile land and good schools. In 1930, Maitland became a full municipality. The name "Maitland" comes from the Maori language meaning "place of long grass." In 1984, Maitland voters passed a referendum to change their name to Flaherty Park after then-Mayor Tom Flaherty who had led the town through difficult times during that year's hurricane season. Flaherty Park is adjacent to Biscayne Bay and contains many historical sites such as Fort Myers National Wildlife Refuge and Key Largo State Park which were all established prior to Maitland becoming a municipality. The park also features golf courses designed by Arnold Palmer and Jack Nicklaus as well as multiple lakes including Lake Okeechobee which has been home to several thousand sunfish since 1978 when it began being stocked with rainbow trout by USF&G Fisheries Limited in partnership with local landowners/Zoos/ aquariums
