The Marco Island Air Force Base was established in 1942 as a military airfield in the Unincorporated community of Marco Island, Florida. The base served as a training ground for the United StatesAAF during World War II. In 1945, the Air Force re-opened the base as an active duty USAF facility and it remained so untilactivated in 1993. In 1992, after more than 50 years of service to the people of Marco Island, the Air Force donated two Douglas DC-3s to be used at the base as gift aircraft for Christmas celebration. At this time, there were no other gift aircraft available onMarcoIsland AFB. These 2 C-123A Globemasters quickly became popular with residents and visitors alike for their unique appearance and easy flying ability - both when taking off from runway 18L/35R and landing on runway 9L/27R. Today, these two Globemasters continue to serve as gifts for friends and family members who visit or live in Marco Island - often providing fly time opportunities for locals and tourists alike!

Marco Island, Florida is a small island located in the Gulf of Mexico and bordered by the Mississippi River to the east and north, and Alabama to the west. The island was first discovered by Spanish explorers on August 24, 1565 when they sighted land off of Marco Island. The name Marco was given to the small island because its only resources were girders and logs. After a failed attempt to settle the island with Hendry Jones and his men in 1694, Spain purchased Marco Island from Jones for $8 million in 1802. In 1901, after two years of construction, US Naval Base Fort Myers was established on Marco Island as part of World War I preparations for American entry into war against Germany. The US military post remained until 1966 when it was closed due to budget cuts. In 1934, President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued Executive Order 9394 which ordered all federal lands within 1 mile (1 km) of any coast or river within ten miles (16 km) of Miami be opened up for development including Marco Island. This order led to the erection of numerous office buildings and other infrastructure on what became known as "TheIsland". As oil exploration increased around Miami during the 1930s, new settlers began arrive on Marco Island seeking cheap land close to potential refining plants and natural gas fields being developed in South Florida at that time. By 1937, there were over 100 businesses operating out of three-story erected concrete structures on what is now University Boulevard Southwest near CR 123A/B/C/D adjacent to Biscayne Bayou used today as an airport taxi ride area! During World War II various naval bases were established on Marco Island such as Naval Air Station Miramar which served both Americas Navy ships based at Coco Solo airfield; Naval Torpedo Station Key West; Naval Surface Warfare Center Jacksonville; Amphibious Attack Squadron Fourteen; Battle Group Two Hundred Forty-NINE Seventh Fleet's flagship USS Enterprise (CV-6); Service Squadron One Hundred Thirty-Fourth Light Infantry Regiment Headquarters Battalion detachment facilities ashore at Seagull Point Marina As World War II ended, much of this infrastructure had been destroyed or mothballed due to budgetary limitations set forth under President Harry S Truman's Executive Order 9267 which sought To reduceArmy National Guard deployments across America while also expanding Army posts throughout America while reducing dependency upon wasteful peacetime spending programs such as Project Eudora This executive order resulted in many jobs being created across parts Of America but particularly In The Midwest where thousands Of soldiers had left their families behind just prior To hostilities beginning On October 7th 1945 USS Enterprise carrying Rear Admiral Arthur Kimes made history when she became first American warship ever sunk with depth charges off North Carolina coast approximately 190 NM south east of Cape Hatteras Banks having departed Wilmington On September 25th 1945 searching for enemy submarines after Wildcats picked up indications that a submarine may have been operating in area CNOAC 007 . Upon contact lost control using her self powered torpedo tube launch systems , came about 1200 feet below surface dropped her torpedoes at position centered

The island was originally settled by the Menomonee tribe of Native Americans in the 17th century. A visit by Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1559 resulted in the first European sighting of Marco Island. In 1815, American Captain James Cook sighted Marco Island and named it for his compatriot, Marco Polo. The island remained part of the US government until 1959 when it became part of Florida under the US Constitution as an unincorporated territory within Miami-Dade County. The United States Air Force (USAF) is a branch of the U.S. military that provides air support and services to NATO members and partner nations. The USAF was founded on 23 May 1947 as the USAF Reserve, which was part of the National Guard Bureau. On 1 September 1947, the USAF was reorganized as a separate service, with its own directorate general and headquarters in Washington D.C., effective 1 October 1947. The first operational squadron of the USAF was activated at Offutt AFB, Nebraska on 18 December 1946 under wing Commander Colonel Samuel Eaker III with aircraft A-20 Havocs. In 1951, when Tactical Air Command (TAC) was established, it transferred all remaining responsibility for combat aviation from ANG to TAC and activated fighter squadrons at Langley AFB Virginia; Randolph AFB Texas; George Island Guam; Fairchild AFB Hawaii; and Waco TX). By 1961 all but one of these bases had been closed or converted into missile sites: Randolph became an Strategic Air Command Base (SAC), while George Island became Vandenberg AFB California; Fairchild became Minot AFB North Dakota; Waco became Elmendorf AFB Alaska]. On 15 February 1952 President Harry S Truman signed Executive Order 12603 which created USAAF Europe Ballistic Missile Agency (EBA). This agency would be responsible for developing strategic bombers capable of carrying nuclear weapons over European airspace in order to deter potential Soviet aggression against NATO member countries should such a contingency arise. With this new organization came also new responsibilities including providing aerial reconnaissance for enforcing Allied air defenses within Continental Europe as well as providing targeted airstrikes against enemy targets should deterrence fail or be ineffective
