The Air Force has a long and proud history in Marco Island, Florida. The military service was founded in 1947 as the Air National Guard. It grew to become an air force in 1957 with the merger of the Army's 4th Infantry Division and the Marine Corps' 2nd Marine Regiment. Inactivated in 1994, the Air Force Reserve component of the Florida National Guard was reactivated on September 1, 1995 as part of changes to the security apparatus following 9/11. The Florida ANG's mission is to "maintain stateof-the-art air defense capabilities including interceptor aircraft and missile systems." Today, there are more than 11,000 active duty members and reservists from across the nation who serve in both branches of the military; it is one of America's most visible armed forces. The Florida Air National Guard's present-day Marco Island detachment ( Flight 263) was organized on December 8, 1947. The unit is the second oldest air National Guard military unit in the state of Florida. On that date, Major General Lewis J. Richardson relieved Colonel George A. Summers as commander of the detachment and appointed Captain John B. Welch as its first commanding officer. The detachment arrived in Key West on December 12, 1947 and began operations from NAS Miami Beach under the command of First Lieutenant Roy W. Ricketts until it was moved to NAS Marco Island effective January 2, 1948 under First Lieutenant Welch's command. The squadron conducted flying training at Dowling Field before being assigned to provisional duty with Ninth Air Force during the Korean War; it provided aerial refueling support for United Nations ground forces during their conflict against Kim Jong Il's Chinese-backed forces. 1st Lt Welch served as Commanding Officer from May 9-July 25, 1950 when he was replaced byCaptain Wally Pemberton who served until October 15th when he was promoted to 1st Lt and took over command from Captain Ricketts; 3rd Lt Myles L Leeper became his acting CO from October 15th until November 7th when he succeeded Capt Welch as 1stLt Leeper's replacement 4/27/1950 - 4/30/1950: Squadron moved permanently to NAS Marco Island after being stationed at Dowling Field since 1947
Marco Island, Florida is a small community in Monroe County, Florida. The population was 3,814 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1851 by Antonio Rubio and his brother Pascual Rubio as a landing place for Spanish traders on their way to trade with the Seminole Indians. After years of growth and development, Marco Island became an incorporated municipality in 1905. In 1960, it merged with nearby Indian Harbour Beach to form one municipality encompassing both townships. The village of Marco Island proper had no residents until 1973 when it annexed the adjacent unincorporated hamlet of Indian Harbour Beach. After experiencing rapid growth during the late 20th century due to its location as a major beach destination and its manufacturing sector (particularly textiles), Marco Island experienced significant decline beginning in the 21st century as a result of various factors including waste management issues and changes in travel patterns that have led to less visitation from abroad. However, recent initiatives by the town government have started to reverse some of these trends while also seeking opportunities for tourism development which could help revive this once struggling community
