The Marco Island Army Garrison, also known as the Fort Myers Garrison, was an active military installation on Marco Island, Florida from 1892 until its closure in 1959. The garrison served as a center for training and testing of United States Army soldiers. It was also home to the first U.S. Navy Marine Corps base on island. In 1892, the fort was founded by Colonel John Lunsford Smith as part of efforts by the United States to secure naval control of Marco Island after Canada had acquired it during the American Revolution. The fort housed a detachment of Marines under Captain George Hanks Johnston from 1893 until 1898 when it became part of the Jacksonville Naval Militia Force and then the Jacksonville Volunteer Infantry Regiment before being decommissioned in 1909. In 1957, following World War II's end and with concerns about potential nuclear warfare, all U.SArmy Soldier stationed abroad were ordered back home except for those stationed at Fort Meyers which remained open until 1959 due to its proximity to Miami Beach and other southern bases; all Marine detachments returned home that same year too. As a result of this decision all remaining land at Fort Myers became an inactive military installation known today as "Fort Myers Garrison Museum." Prior to opening in 1902 there was no means for residents on Marco Island to communicate with their units located many miles away aboard ship or in Tampa Bay due to lack of infrastructure; service personnel would only be able to report Inland via radio or horseback messenger service provided bymail between garrison andshore facilities at nearby Everglades Naval Air Station; however this system crashed within 8 months due primarily to weather conditions caused by heavy rains which closed both airfields preventing any flights from taking off while still raining consequently causing extensive damage including loss of aircraft parts etc.. A new wireless link upriver arrived in 1915 allowing communication between unit commanders ashore and troops serving abroad using voice-activated radios; however this system failed within 2 years because inadequate maintenance made it susceptible to unauthorized use etc..

Marco Island is a small island located in the Gulf of Mexico, about 20 miles south of Mobile, Alabama. It was first settled by Spanish colonists in the early 1800s and remained unincorporated until it became part of Marco County, Florida, on November 3, 1907. The island has been inhabited since Paleo-Indian times and is thought to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas on mainland America. After being acquired by Spain as part of Louisiana in 1803, the island was ruled by an aristocracy that included members of Spanish nobility and military officers. In 1898 during World War I, American forces occupied the island after their victory over Spain at Bayou Teche. The US Marines held onto control for several months before withdrawing to Fort Brooke onshore. The US military left Marco Island behind when they withdrew from Cuba in 1902. The Atchafalaya River (now known as Bayous de la Tortuga) flows through Marco Island and provides drinking water to many nearby towns and villages. The river also served as a natural border between this area and Pensacola County to prevent piracy centered around Mobile Bay. On July 16th 1865 during Reconstruction period following Civil War, Union General Nathaniel Banks placed 10 cannons along the banks of bayous de la Tortuga in order to protect Pensacola from Confederate attacks; these cannons remain standing today as a reminder of this historical event. In 1907, Marco Island became part of Marco County after it was annexed from Pensacola County; at that time it consisted only of land within present-day Marco Island itself and two adjacent islands: Santa Rosa and Prudential (which are now Manatee Beach). Prior to annexation, both Santa Rosa and Prudential were uninhabited because they were too close to populated areas for farming or development purposes; however, with access to fresh water resources provided by the Atchafalaya River (and later via an additional channel), these islands quickly began becoming developed into resort communities with multiple stores/bars/nightlife options available within walking distance or automobile range. Today much of what once constituted Sarasota county – including most notably its downtown core – remains within present-day Sarasota city limits while additional suburban areas have grown up around central Sarasota beyond town Limits Street boundaries; though some aspects – such as Cape Coral's Stampede Park – continue situated within town limits bounds today while still encompassing significant portions outside them due largely theretofore undeveloped waterfront property line acreage currently constituting much more than half Marathon Point Lighthouse ('The Head'), if not all its shoreline area! One major reason why development has occurred so rapidly along Town Limits Street boundaries is that there are no alternative streets or thoroughfares providing easy access into or outlying sections - other than car parks / driveways leading directly down Townlimits Street corridors! This makes Downtown Sarasota City Limits very difficult indeed even for people who live inside 'town limits' borders! Consequently some residents find themselves living cheekby-jowl with Interstate 4 corridor commuters / Welcome Center employees / local hotel guests & restaurant patrons alike day & night - often unable even remotely unto prevent neighbor neighbour interactions etc., which can easily become quite contentious at best...!!!
