The United States Army was founded in 1775 and the first military unit to serve in Florida was the 2nd Regiment of Infantry. The 1st Battalion, 5th Regiment, Florida Volunteers fought in the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and were part of General Zachary Taylor’s army that won the Battle of Buena Vista on October 20, 1847. On December 13, 1861, as a result of the American Civil War, the United States Army arrived in Marco Island after sailing from Savannah, Georgia. The1st Brigade Combat Team was activated on January 6 and served under First Brigade Commander Major General James H. Fenton until February 15 when it became part of Third Brigade Commanding General Richard S. Ewell’s brigade command west of Stonington Harbor. In 1865 following the surrender of Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House Lieutenant Colonel John Matson’s 1st Volunteer Cavalry Squadron led by Captain George A. Smith captured three Confederate supply trains near Fort Brooke which provided food for 10,000 Union soldiers garrisoned there during the war. In 1898 through an act signed by President William McKinley on April 9th Congress passed legislation authorizing appropriation for construction of what is now known as Camp Grant north side Of Marco Island along with Marcus Street across from it where 100 cavalry troopers under Second Lieutenant Arnold Lillie held off 900 Spanish defenders during what is known as “the Battle Of San Juan Hill” on May 25th 1898 while also repelling an attack by 300 Spanish Marines landing behind enemy lines aboard “Venerable Joséfito” gunship off shore

The Marco Island Army Post was established in 1868 as part of the Florida Territorial Militia. The post served as a military outpost until 1933, when it was discontinued and its functions transferred to the Fort Myers Military Park. In 1934, the army post was re-established at this location and remained in operation until 1945. It was then disbanded and its assets transferred to the newly formed County of Miami Beach Department of Defense Services. The department was abolished in 1947 and its assets were transferred back to the state government. The Marco Island Army Post remains a local history museum today.

He named the island after himself, making it one of only two places in America that were given this honor (the other being Havana). Over time, Gilbert developed Castro Harbour into one of Miami's most popular tourist destinations because of its clear waters and white sand beaches. In 1926, he donated land onMarco Islandto create Doral Beach which is now one of Miami's most popular tourist destinations also known for its shopping malls and resorts

Marco Island is a small, sandy island located in the Gulf of Mexico about 240 miles southwest of Tampa, Florida. The island was first inhabited by the Calusa people who were known to have hunted and gathered shellfish. In 1565, Spanish explorers discovered the island while exploring the southern Gulf of Mexico and named it after Miguel López de Marco, captain of one of Spain's two voyages that visited Cuba in 1502-1503. The first European settlement on Marco Island was made by Captain John Steedman in 1675 as part of a failed attempt to establish English control over Pensacola Bay. The only native inhabitant of Marco Island at that time was Chief Yaneta. After years of British occupancy, Spanish sovereignty over Marco Island passed from Spain to Great Britain in 1821 when the United States acquired it as part of its acquisition of Florida from Spain. The first permanent white settlers arrived on Marco Island during the 1830s when American entrepreneurs opened up trade with Cuba andSpain through Key West. By 1835, there were 10 white families living on the island and 2 Black Seminoles working as slaves for whites. A year later, Ulysses S. Grant became president and ordered all US military forces out of Cuba which led to increased smuggling activity through Key West which caused a sharp increase in violence on Marco Island between slaveholders and their slaves. By 1840, most white households had left for good due to economic problems created by Cuban independence and an increasing flow of African Americans seeking freedom via slavery into Florida; however black residents continued to live on the island until 1850 because they could not gain entry into either country without being free or owning property inside both states. In 1851, Governor James Kenedy issued an executive order prohibiting blacks from residing within 1/4 mile (0.6 km)of any white person without written consent from both parties; this order effectively ended all black residency onMarcoIsland until 1954 when Reconstruction began resulting in limited African American participation in local government until after World War II when many returned home following passage of legislation providing citizenship rights for racial minorities nationwide In 1954 another executive order banning blacks from residing within 1/4 mile (0.6 km)of any white person without written consent from both parties resulted in further tension between whites and blacks onthe island culminating with a series Of riots that week which left 3 dead including 3 whites . This event is generally considered to be the beginningofthe endofblack residencyonMarcoIsland although some historians argue that there may have been earlier incidents preceding it During this period regular public meetings were held throughout the island where decisions were made about infrastructure projects such as road construction or land acquisitions
