Marco Island is a small town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 7,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is home to the Marco Island Naval Weapons Station. The town was founded in 1853 by John R. Tisdale and named after his ancestor, Major-General Andrew J. Tisdale, who had fought in the American Revolutionary War and served as a brigadier general under George Washington. The first coffee plantation on Marco Island was established by José Antonio Carrera in 1794. In 1821, Captain David Dixon organized a landing party to explore the Everglades and found that there were no navigable rivers leading into Miami Bay; instead they found an estuary with many natural harbors where they built two plantations: Carrera's on Fort Pierce Creek and Dixon's on Biscayne Bayou (now known as Islamorada Boulevard). In 1828–29 Spanish explorer Pedro Menéndez de Avilés discovered what he thought was another island off shore of Marco Island; however it turned out to be Biscayne Bayou which he renamed Santa Rosa de la Vega (now called Military Road). That year also saw the founding of Pensacola by José María Morelos y Ocampo after he captured it from Spain during their war for independence. In 1830, Governor Manuel Menéndez granted land east of present day Pensacola Beach to James Pounds for $2,000 based on his promise to build a school thereon if he ever became governor of Florida; Pounds donated one acre per month untilconstructing a brick school building that still stands today within sight of Pensacola Beach Airport. At this time most of Mobile County had been annexed by Gainesville [in what is now Escambia County], so Stroud could only build west side property near Gulfport—Pounds’ original site—and not along Santa Rosa de la Vega Street because annexation would have forced him to move his business headquarters from Gainesville to Mobile City Center (now downtown Mobile), which then would have been located adjacent to Pensacola Street between Fourth Street and Fifth Avenue N/A but never happened because gainsville businessmen got together and bought up all valuable swampland east of Third Street N/A so Stroud couldn’t move his business into downtownMobile either.—[Gainesville boosters] That same year also saw the opening of Floridian Coffee Company near what is now University Parkway N/A which became very successful becoming one of Floridians most important businesses.—[Floridian owner James Pounds] In 1840 Governor Manuel Menéndez ordered Gadsden Parish Sheriff Colston To arm 100 men with rifles “to suppress any opposition should any white person attempt without lawful authority to purchase or receive coffee from our negroes”.—[Sheriff Colston orders 100 black men armed] . . . Marco Island is a small island located in the Gulf of Mexico about 60 miles southeast of Tampa, Florida. The island's name comes from Spanish and means "Island of Marco". In 1851, Marco Island was part of the Tampa Bay Territory and was sold to the United States government for $1,000. It became a U.S. military post in 1903. After being ceded to Florida in 1924, it reverted back to its original name on November 1, 1928. On May 15, 1959, President Dwight Eisenhower issued an executive order recognizing the town of Marco Island as an official community within St Petersburg County, Florida. The city of St Petersburg annexed the island on December 3rd 1967 and officially renamed it Marco Island City Hall Annex on March 8th 1984 after Mayor George Fecondo (D) allowed for that change at a meeting held at his office at Channelside Park South downtown St Petersburg
