When the United States Marine Corps was activated in 1941, it had only a few hundred Marines. The Marines would serve during World War II and afterwards, but their history begins much earlier. In 1898, the Marco Island Naval Militia was organized to protect the island from pirates. In 1906, a group of marines from New York City were sent to Marco Island as part of an experiment to see if they could be trained there as naval infantrymen. The experiment failed and the marines returned home; however, they left behind a legacy that is still being carried out today. The Marine Corps has been serving on Marco Island since 1907. It first arrived with several tents and barracks; however, by 1912 the corps had erected a permanent building on land donated by Mayor James Laughlin. The original structure consisted of two stories with eight rooms on each floor and served as both Headquarters for the militia and also as an arsenal for armaments. During World War I, when troops were called up for service in Europe, Marines fromMarco Island acted as decoys in order to draw German sailors away from shore installations where they might attack Allied warships or submarines. In 1940, Hawaii became an independent state and within days after its declaration Magellan Islands (now known as Christmas Key) came under US military control. On December 8th anchored at anchor off Christmas Key while Marines completedqv volleys over their rifles into the key’s interior in preparation for landing any American forces flying into or landing on Guam should hostilities break out between Japan and America (the US-British Empire). The Marines of the 1st Marine Regiment deployed to Marco Island, Florida in November 1945. They were part of the largest amphibious landing on American soil and played a significant role in the prosecution of World War II. The regiment is now known as the 3rd Marine Regiment.
Marco Island is a small town located in the panhandle of Florida. The population was 8,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of Miami-Dade County. In 2000, it had a population of 5,799. Marco Island's economy revolves around tourism and manufacturing; most notably, its seafood industry. The island has two main beaches:Marco Polo and Bald Cypress Beach. There are also several smaller beaches on the island as well as an marina and golf course. The name Marco comes from Italian meaning "the beautiful one" or "the land that we live on." This may be why so many people from Italy come to visit Marco Island – because it looks like their homeland! The island was originally named after Vittorio Emanuele II, King of Italy who ruled over most of what is now Florida during the 19th century. At that time, much of present-day Miami Bay was still under Spanish control and so the Spanish called this area San Marcos de la Vega (Strait of Magellan). After American independence was gained in1812 by Ulysses S. Grant, Spain ceded all their possessions east of Havana to America including Marco Island which became part of our territory! In 1876, William Cushing started a lumber business on Marco Island which continued until 1978 when it closed due to poor economic times in the region. The lumber company built a large mill complex that remains standing today – evidence that even during tough times businesses can stay afloat! One interesting fact about this mill complex is that it features a replica lighthouse from Mobile, Alabama! Shortly thereafter however, another lumber company took over the complex and demolished it for no good reason other than greed – although some speculate they did this because they were short on cash!) Today there are only ruins left behind from both mills…one through vandalism by vandals and one due to subsidence caused by Hurricane Charley back in 2004! oneself fishingindustry played an important role early on for both these mills with anglers coming ashore for fresh catch while loggers were landing woodchucks/other shellfish for sale offshore!!!!!! A variety of fruits are grown here such as oranges (the biggest producer), apples (two types), pears (also big producers), grapes (a key crop), plums (another key fruit) and figs (a very popular winter fruit). Some specialties include lobster dishes made specifically with lobster meat sourced locally or using imported supplies as well as calamari dishes prepared especially in honor of Pope Francis’ visit to Cuba last year!!! There are also cattle beef products produced here such as liverwurst etcetera!!! Finally some manufactures include those pesky sun visors used by locals everywhere 🙂 From 1900 until 1970 when local government ended its existence following annexation by Miami-Dade County, Marco Island served as both a community center and jail facility before becoming completely abandoned again circa 1980s due to lack funding/ infrastructure renewal efforts throughout all levels !! However recent excavation has unearthed artifacts dating back to at least 1800 AD making this once again an active archaeological site open for public visitation !! All levels have been working together towards restoring/updating infrastructure within just three years since I assumed office & restoration began Apr 1st 2016

The island was named for Giovanni Marco, an Italian explorer who explored the area in 1795-96. In 1867, the United States acquired the island from Spain and renamed it Marco Island after General Antonio López de Marco y Torrejon, commander of Spanish forces that fought against American colonists during the American Revolution.
