Marco Island, Florida is a small island located in the Gulf of Mexico. It was first settled by Spanish colonists in the 16th century and became part of the United States after it was acquired from Spain in 1821. The island has been occupied by several cultures over the years, including African Americans, Seminoles, and Native Americans. In recent years, Marco Island has become home to a number of businesses and homes that are popular with residents and tourists. The island is named for Captain Marco Alonso de la Cabaña y Costilla y los Durán who discovered it on July 2, 1513 while exploring the area around Tampa Bay. At that time, it was known as Chagreskee or Conch Key. The first European to visit Marco Island was Juan Ponce de León who landed there on June 6, 1514. He named it Isla Grande because it resembled an elephant he had seen in Europe. The first permanent European settlers arrived on the island in 1692 when Father Antonio Menéndez de Avilés set up a mission on the north side of the island near what is now downtown Marco Island. After failing to achieve any significant success at his mission, Father Avilés left Marco Island for good in 1738. Three years later Spaniards found another group of natives living on about six acres of land off shore which they named Santa Cruz de Tenerife after their patron saint - though no evidence exists that anyone ever actually visited Santa Cruz de Tenerife.) Prior to its acquisition by America, Santa Cruz de Tenerife served as a key stopover for Spanish ships during their annual voyage from Havana to Vera Cruz laden with treasure seized from Spanish warships off Mexico City." This early history gives some indication as to why Marco Island may have seemed like an ideal place for white people to settle: Although both sides were interested in acquiring this valuable piece of real estate at various points throughout its history (the British wanted it because they believed sugar would be extracted from its sugarcane plantations; Spain coveted it because slavery would allow them access to key Indian resources), neither side could control or own everything on or around Marco Isle so they began settling parcels here instead." In 1694 two groups of Spanish missionaries arrived but soon abandoned their efforts due lack of success farming rice and other crops."
