The Marco Island Naval Station was a naval station located on the island of Marco Island, Florida in the United States. It was one of the six military installations operated by the US Navy during World War II. The station was activated on December 15, 1941 as part of Operation Neptune's Spear and served as an airfield for RAF Bomber Command bombers during the war. The station closed in 1945 and its assets were transferred to Homestead Air Force Base on Miami-Dade County, Florida.
Marco Island is a small town in the Treasure Coast of Florida. It is located on the southern coast of Marco Island, just east of the Stonington River. The population was 7,405 at the 2010 census. The island has been inhabited for more than 4,000 years and saw its first European settlers in 1614. In 1836, Marco Island became part of the United States and was named for Vice President Andrew Johnson. The name "Marco" comes from Italian explorer Giovanni da Marco who explored the area in 1492-93 while searching for a route to India. The island's economy is based largely on agriculture and tourism. Agriculture includes sugarcane, corn, cotton, citrus fruit, potatoes, beef cattle and hogs; while tourism focuses on swimming in the Stonington River or beachcombing near mainland Miami orMarco Island National Wildlife Refuge (BIRD). There are also several restaurants and bars available on the island. As of 2019 there are plans to build a $165 million marina that would include an hotel and five thousand units of housing; as well as create new roads and parks across the island that would be open to visitors year-round.

Marco Island is a small, uninhabited island located in the Gulf of Mexico about 190 miles southwest of Tampa. Marco Island was first explored by Spanish explorers on October 25, 1565, during the explorations of Hernando de Soto. The island was named for Vincenzo Marco, one of the captains of De Soto's hispanic expedition. In 1821, after Florida became a U.S. state, Marco Island was included in what is now Hillsborough County and organized into a town by act of Congress on November 3, 1824. The town was named for General Antonio López de Zandt who served as military governor of Florida from 1798 to 1801 and as president pro tempore of the United States from 1800 to 1801. The first residents were French colonists who arrived in 1794 and built a plantation on the island. In 1821, American settlers arrived and developed the area into a landed aristocracy with large plantations that produced sugar cane and other crops. By 1830, only 1 percent of all men working in Hillsborough County were employed on Marco Island; most jobs were carried out ashore on Tampa or elsewhere in Hillsborough County. In 1899–1900 an eruption took place on nearby Saint Petersburg Bay which destroyed several homes and killed at least six people including three children playing near their parents home on December 12th; this event has been called one of the worst natural disasters in Tampa history. In 1916–1917 an epidemic swept through Marco Island leading to death among both locals and visitors; it is thought that many cases may have arisen from contact with sick animals left behind by previous visitors or because Islanders themselves had contracted typhoid fever while visiting Tampa Bay Islands). In 1932 an airstrip was constructed at present-day Clearwater Beach so that more airplanes could be used for crop operations around Sarasota Bay; this development led to increased tourism onMarcoIsland which declined following World War II when aircraft became more difficult to find and use than before due to advances in air travel technology
Marco Island is a small island located in theatham of Marco Island, Florida. It was first settled by the Arawaks and then by the Tequestas. The island was originally named Illa de las Palmas by Alonso de Pineda in 1567. In 1819, it was given to Spain as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolutionary War. The United States acquired it from Spain in 1828 as part of the Adams–Onís Treaty. The United States government built Fort Moultrie on the island during World War I to protect it from Spanish forces. In 1932, Fort Moultrie was decommissioned and turned into a tourist resort.
