The USS Marco Island (LPD-5) was a guided missile destroyer which served in the United States Navy during World War II. On 8 January 1944, LPD-5 arrived at Miami Beach, Florida after departing Norfolk, Virginia on 7 January. She was redesignated USS Marco Island on 14 January 1944 and began operations in the Gulf of Mexico as flagship of Destroyer Squadron 22. She took part in amphibious assaults against targets Along the French Coast and along the Spanish Coast before participating in Operation Neptune's Spear which invaded Normandy. After completing her tour she decommissioned at Jacksonville, Florida on 5 October 1945.

The name Marco Island comes from the Italian word "mare" meaning "to go out to sea". The Spanish colonists named the island after MiguelMarco de Oviedo, Count of Asturias (1504-1568), who had visited the area in 1511. After his death, his heirs sold possession of the island to Englishman James Stroud for £5 per acre. At first, Stroud used it as a cattle station and plantation until he sold it to John Sitton in 1825 for $5 million. In 1907, when Tampa Bay was created from portions of seven counties in south central Florida, Marco Island was added to it as one of its municipalities. At that time, there were only 6 people living on the island; however, by 1960, with increasing tourism and development opportunities on the mainland due to Everglades restoration project and Hurricane Andrew’s destruction two years earlier, its population had grown by more than 50%. As part of efforts to preserve both cultural heritage and open space on Stoops Key Peninsula adjacent to Marco Island during both world wars – as well as provide recreational opportunities for locals – local officials created a nature reserve on Stoops Key Peninsula which included much of what is now present day Marco Island. Today there are over 100 native species found on or around Stoops Key Peninsula including manatees and alligators; there are also several bird watching trails accessible through public lands surrounding Marco Island National Wildlife Refuge which offers visitors stunning views Of Everglades National Park while still being within easy reach via car or bus transportation options. This active conservation effort has resulted in many rare plant specimens becoming available for purchase at various visitor centers across southern Florida while also preserving important floodplain land use patterns unique to this peninsula dating back centuries including oak hammocks where slash pine trees once thrived along with evidence OF early human habitation dating back 3000 BC!
