In 1902, Antonio Lopez founded the Lopez Coffee Company on Marco Island. The company soon became one of the most successful in the business. By 1916, Lopez had built a sizeable plantation on the island. He also established a small but highly profitable grocery store on-island. Lopez's legacy is still felt today - his coffee beans are some of the most popular in all of Florida.

Marco Island is a small, isolated island in the Florida Keys that has been home to humans for over 10,000 years. The name Marco comes from the Mims word "marco," meaning "high ground." The first permanent European settlers on the island were Spanish soldiers who landed in 1565 and soon began trading with local natives. In 1614, Englishman James vivo land on Marco Island after sailing through an area where trade was forbidden by Spanish Authorities. He named the island after himself, and it remained under English control until 1763 when Spain ceded it to Britain as part of the Treaty of Paris following the American Revolution. The British used Marco as a base for their military campaigns against Spanish colonists in southern Florida during this time period. In 1821, a group of Americans led by Capt. John Dennison established themselves on Marco Island and began exploring nearby Key West. Their location made them vulnerable to attack by Mexican forces who coveted Key West for its rich phosphate resources. After several months of hard fought battle, Capt. Dennison's party emerged victorious and returned to mainland America with new supplies and maps which helped guide Ulysses S. Grant's successful march against Mexico in 1846 during the Mexican-American War (1846-48). As part of California statehood in 1850, Marco Island became part of Fort Myers County; however, because fortifications had not been built on it since before Spanish occupancy, it remained uninhabited until 1906 when a detachment from Coast Guard Station Marathon visited the island and selected 20 families as residents for protection from potential pirate attacks off shore (the population at this time was only 6). The original inhabitants of Marco Island are now considered historical footnote due to their lack of descendants remaining on the island today; however, there are still many artifacts left behind from their pastimes including fishing nets and spear points dating back 10K years!
