The Margate Army Post Office was established in 1892. It served as the first post office in Margate, Florida and remained in operation until 1959. The first postmaster was Mrs. A.H. Jeffries and the second was Mrs. Fannie Ladd. In 1909, the Margate Armory became the first armory in Florida to be equipped with a postal service station. The armory continued to serve as an armory until it closed its doors in 1954. From 1909 to 1954, the Margate Army Post Office also served as the repository for military supplies and equipment collected by members of the military during World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam War and Desert Storm. From 1954 to 1959, the Margate Army Post Office also functioned as a mailroom for all of Fort Meade on Anna Maria Island where troops were stationed during this time period (the island eventually became part of Sarasota County). Today, Fort Meade remains a major U.S Military installation with over 2700 soldiers garrisoned throughout six states located within driving distance of Ft Meade including Sarasota County!
