As one of the most established coffee towns in the United States, Margate has a rich coffee history that can be found from before European settlers arrived in this area. In fact, some of Margate’s earliest coffee beans were grown on a farmstead that still stands today. One of the first grocery stores in Margate was called The Grapesvine. This store began selling coffee in 1892, and it would continue to sell roasted beans until 1969. By 1903, The Grapesvine had started selling ground beans as well as espresso drinks. Additionally, by 1911, The Grapesvine had opened up a café called The Coffee House which would serve both roasted and ground beans until 1984. In 1916, Captain Bicknell opened his own grocery store in Margate named The Bayou Café which would serve both roasted and ground Beans until 1972. In 1928-29, Captain Bicknell reopened his store as an espresso house with a drive-thru window which remains today! In 1951-52, Captain Bicknell built an addition to his store that became known as “The Annex” which served both Italian cafes and later also processed food items such as pizza ovens! By 1975-76Captain Bicknell sold all his businesses together and closed down his entire business complex! However - one building from this complex still remains active - the Admiral Café! Today - much like back when Captain Bicknell operated his stores - many locals turn to artisan coffee shops for their morning caffeine fix! Margate, Florida is a small town located on the east coast of Florida. The population was 3,731 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. Margate has been inhabited by humans for over 10,000 years and was first settled in 1795 by Captain John Smith. In 1898, the United States acquired land at Margate to build Fort Myer and keep British forces from entering American soil. The fort served as a base of operations for American forces during World War II and was later renamed Fort Meade after General George Meade, commander of Ulysses S. Grant's army during the war. The post office at Margate opened in 1892 and remained in operation until it closed in 1957. The first school in Margate was built in 1894 and became known as East School District No. 1 before becoming known as East High School when it merged with West School District No. 2 to become West High School in 1951. In 1928, Margate organized its own government under the name of Municipal Court which lasted until 1962 when it merged into Jacksonville County Government under Governor Claude Kirkwood’s administration. In 1976, Mayor Bob McCoy formed a city council based on an election held that year and installed his own mayor-council form of government which still exists today; this form allows elected officials to veto ordinances passed by city council without having their vote countedenance taken into account; however, Mayor McCoy can only remove his own appointees from office while they are still living or dead (the City Council cannot impeach mayors). Margate has several industries including shipbuilding (USS Enterprise), shrimp farming (Fisherman's Wharf), printing and publishing (Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst), plastics manufacturing (Boeing Mobile Home Park), agriculture (apple orchards) and real estate development (Homesales Incorporated). The beans were roasted and ground onsite, and this mixture allowed for a more intense flavor and better cup quality. Some years later, French colonists discovered Java (now Indonesia) and began importing coffee from there. This led to the development of the world's first espresso machine in 1795. Soon after, Starbucks was founded in Seattle by two Frenchmen, Angelo Roncaglia and Stefan Sagar.
Margate, Florida is a small town located in Lee County, Florida. The population was 3,895 at the 2010 census. The history of Margate began with the early Spanish settlers who built a cabin on the banks of the bay in 1796. The area that now makes up Margate was first inhabited by Tocobaga Indians and then by Seminole Indians before being acquired by the United States in 1821. In 1834, the area became part of Fort Brooke and was named for General James K. Polk who had commanded Ulysses S. Grant’s army during the Mexican-American War. In 1907, Fort Brooke was renamed Fort Pierce after Rear Admiral John Fenton Preston Mellon and his wife Clara Barton Pole Mellon. The community grew rapidly following World War II when many workers came to help build military installations in nearby Port Everglades and Miami Beach. By 1960, Margate had become an agricultural center with over 100 farms producing crops such as tomatoes, corn, cotton and eggplants. However, development slowed after 2000 when Hurricane Andrew caused significant damage to businesses and homes throughout Lee County. However, growth has resumed since 2007 with new construction projects like a new shopping mall and recreation center as well as expansions to existing businesses like Soapstone Farms grocery store and Sunrise Golf Club
Margate was founded by Captain John St. George in 1820 as a small town on the mouth of the bay. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1834, Margate became an important seaport, and began toimport goods andexport services from Pensacola. In 1860, the first railroad reached Margate and it soon became a major commercial center for the region. By 1870, Margate had become an important naval base with its own harbor and dockyards. The town continued to grow until World War II when it was bombed by the United States military in 1942. After the war, Margate gradually lost its importance but persisted as a minor community until its annexation by nearby Pensacola in 1960.
