Margate, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 9,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tampa-St Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to set foot on what is now Margate were Seminole Indians who called it "Mahalkee" meaning place of plenty. There are Arapaho and Apache Indians who still live in the area today. The first white person to come to this area was Captain John Stroud in 1802 while he was sailing down the Gulf Stream from Havana, Cuba. He anchored off the beach and built a cabin which served as his Headquarters for several years until he moved on to Key West, Florida. At that time, much of present-day Hillsborough County had not been explored or developed yet! Meanwhile, back at Margate there were already people living and working here before Captain Stroud ever arrived! In 1824 George Hennepin discovered salt water near where modern day Gate Boulevard meets US 1 and decided to establish a trading post here. This became known as Fort Hennepin after him! Captain James Cook sailed past this location on his way around South America in 1769 when he visited Tampa Bay and named it "Margate Head." He did not find any land here so his name may have been given to another location nearby but no one knows for sure! In 1855 Jacksonville developer John Prentice laid out what is now downtown Margate with help from military brass during the Seminole Wars against Spanish forces. Mr. Prentice later founded Palm Beach County Commission which helped promote development here throughout Central Florida including Margate! Mr. Prentice's wife donated most of what is now Downtown Parkland adjacent to Fort Hennepin National Monument - making it one of only two properties in all of Palm Beach County that has such a donation! Today you can still see some evidence of Mrs Prentice's generosity including her original red brick courthouse building along Gate Boulevard just south of US 1 - now home to the Museum Of History & Industry (MOHI). When Mrs Prentice died in 1907 her husband bequeathed an additional piece of property - acres bordering Flagler Road eastward intoCollier County - giving rise to what would eventually become Daytona Beach! After Captain Cook's visit many settlers continued searching for land suitable for farming outside Tampa Bay until they finally found success here – beginning large scale settlement by railroads starting with Discovering Railroad Company’s trip through Tampa Bay area on December 5th 1865 led by General James Fenton Cranch bearing news about rich goldfields within 100 miles across Lake Miccosukee near Clearwater River junction! With access to new markets like California these entrepreneurs sawed wood, chopped trees and mined coal until logging operations closed decades ago leaving behind vast tracts currently occupied by homesites-, condos-, schools-, hospitals- all within short walking distance or drive from downtown Margate!!! These days you can take a walk or bike ride right up front doorsteps examples include 20Th century Regency styled Sears Tower condo & inviting urban oasis University City MARGATE!!!! Just enter Main Street/Gate Boulevard intersection onto busy traffic artery turning left onto privatized Sunrise Highway (SR 7) following signs for Interstate 4 exit #205 then follows scenic Flagler Rd., clockwise starting at bend in road about 2 mi., ending at edge of golf course
