By 1820, the Van der Hoff family had built a larger plantation near present day Margate and began to roast their own beans. By 1830, they had developed a large enough processing plant that they could sell their beans all over Florida. Over time, other families also became involved in the business and it continued to grow until it reached its current form today. Today, fresh roasting is an important part of the Margate coffee experience and many local businesses offer their customers this unique service. The process of fresh roasting takes several hours and involves heating up the beans until they are soft enough to be pressurized. Once pressure has been released from these beans, it falls into a small pot on the stove where it is boiled for about 15 minutes until allofthe flavors have melded together. The first Europeans to visit Margate were Spanish explorers on their way to what is now Pensacola in 1768. They named it "Pensacola" after La Punta de Penasquitos on Pensacola Bay. In 1821, Captain John slash and his group of pirates reached Margate from Cuba and named it for their ship, the "Margate". In 1839, Volney Forrester founded Fort Forrester here with help from James Krieger of Jacksonville and others in response to American fears that Seminole Indians would cross over into Florida and attack white settlers. Forrester renamed the fort Fort Moultrie due to its resemblance to Moultrie Island off Georgia's coast. On December 3, 1841, a party of soldiers under the command of Colonel Robert Epps arrived at Margate with orders to suppress Seminole Indian activity near Clearwater River. A skirmish ensued that left four military men dead and six wounded; one soldier was later killed by an arrow fired by a Seminole Indian while trying to surrender. As a result of this fight Governor Manuel López de Santa Anna ordered General Antonio López de Santa Ana commanding force numbering about 2,500 troops set out from Tampa under Colonel Arthur Stoneman march through Miami Valley towards Pensacola carrying supplies for Operation Neptune's Spear which aimed to capture Havana Harbor as well as Mobile Bayou leading upriver towards Pensacola Harbour where they expected Admiral James Farragut's fleet would land under cover of darkness on July 4th 1861 with Assault Squadron Commodore David Dixon Porter in charge) but instead discovered no enemy forces anywhere close enough so commenced abortingOperation Neptune's Spear before it could even begin) returned safely home without any serious damage done-an event which led many Americans including President Abraham Lincoln who was vacationing at Vero Beach at the time to pronounce himself "the happiest man on Earth." In 1865 Confederate General Braxton Bragg tried unsuccessfully (without success)to gain control of Key West via Invasion Force code name “Tampa” hoping thereby embarrassing Ulysses S Grant who had been occupying Tampa since November 14th 1863 when he relieved Ulysses S Grant from command at Sunbury Heights following his failed attempt (unsuccessfully)to take Savannah Tennessee prior thereto). This led directly into the Civil War when both armies moved across state lines starting what became known as The Battle Of Gulfport On April 6teenth 1865 when Confederate General Braxton Braggs Invasion Force attempted unsuccessfully (without success)to gain control of Key West via Invasion Force code name “Tampa” hoping thereby embarrassing Ulysses S Grant who had been occupying Tampa since November 14th 1863 when he relieved Ulysses S Grant from command at Sunbury Heights following his failed attempt (unsuccessfully)to take Savannah Tennessee prior thereto). Margate was a small town in Alachua County, Florida, United States. It was located on the Gulf of Mexico about north of Gainesville and south of Tampa. The town was founded in 1876 by J.C. Margate and his wife, Emma Fenton Margate. The first post office opened in 1877. The town name was changed to Margate in 1907 when it incorporated as a village. In 1916, Margate became the site of the world's first air-sea dogfight between American planes and German Luftwaffe aircraft during World War I. In 1928, Margate had its first water tower built and began using water from the Stonington Aquifer for municipal purposes. In 1929, Interstate 10 was completed through the area and made it much easier for traffic to flow through Margate; however, the population continued to decline until after World War II when it increased dramatically due to postwar migration into the area from nearby Gainesville and Tampa Bay
