Margate, Florida is a town in Brevard County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Combined Statistical Area. Margate is known for its gourmet coffee, which has been praised by many as some of the best in the world. The first coffee beans were grown on nearby Black Horse Farms in 1845 by John Fenton and James Gadsden. In 1895, George Washington Coffee opened his first coffee house in Margate with fourteen barrels of beans per day. By 1919, there were over sixty-six cafes operating in Margate alone. In 1931, Dr. Edwin Land took over ownership of Black Horse Farms and began to produce more than two thousand pounds of coffee a day for various restaurants throughout Orlando area including The Ritz Carlton Hotel and The Starlite Cafe on Sanford Avenue near State Road 494 (now US 301). Over time these businesses became known as Land'sOCoza Restaurants Incorporated or LORI for short. Today land'scoffee continues to be produced under this name throughout much of central Florida including Kissimmee and Daytona Beach areas

Myers Micropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1892 by Major General Edwin Sherman and Captain John H. McGillivray on a small island in the Gulf of Mexico about south of Fort Walton Beach. The two men named it after their homeport of Savannah, Georgia (then Stonington), where they had been rear-guard commander during the American Civil War. In 1896 Margate became a county seat and was renamed for Governor James M. Shannon when he came to office following the death of George Prentice Houston as governor of Florida; Shannon had been mayor of Margate from 1888 to 1892. Margate's growth began with its annexation by Escambia County in 1907; at that time it consisted only of an unincorporated area on the mainland near Margate Cove and an area around Dunedin Bay which included present-day Dunedin and Sebastian counties contains no historical buildings or sites related to local government except for a courthouse built in 1915 on what is now State Road 9A (now US 301). By 1920 there were more than 100 businesses in town; by 1930 there were over 200; by 1940 there were nearly 300 residents and over 500 businesses. After consulting with various friends and family members who lived close by he decided that this would be perfect for his new community because it would have easy access to water AND food supplies without ever having to leave his house! He then enlisted help from Captain John H.-McGillivray who managed all aspects from acquiring land east of fort walton beach through construction materials procurement until finally marketing his concept back home! This started what would become one of America's fastest growing communities - not only did they add homes but also businesses soon followed suit! As word spread about Island Settlement people traveled downrange every day boatload after boatload just so they could see what all the fuss was about! In 1907 Escambia County annexed parts of what are now Margate Village & Lady Lake Estates into its boundaries making Margata officially a county seat! It is part of the Gainesville–Fort Walton Beach–Ardmore Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Margate dates back to 1838 when it was founded as a small fishing village on the southeast coast of Palm Beach County by John A. Dickson and others from Georgia. By 1860, Margate had become a thriving port with wharfage and warehouses for local goods. In 1868, Margate became the seat of Alachua County after legislators moved from Jacksonville to make room for new county seats on the west coast of Florida. In 1903, following passage of the state Constitution which mandated that each county have its own courthouse and jail facilities, Governor Jeptha Biddle ordered the construction of two federal penitentiary buildings in Margate – one known as "Pine Bluff" and another called "Alachua". These structures served as detention centers for both federal prisoners awaiting trial and convicted criminals awaiting sentencing before being released into society. After years of growth thanks to its burgeoning whaling industry and naval activity off nearby Key West (the first US Naval base in Cuba), Margate's population reached 5,000 by 1910 but decreased to 2,500 by 1920 due to World War I-related military housing shortages across Florida; Margate's only commercial branch then was a bed & breakfast operated by Captain Waddell Stephens. However, during World War II there was an immediate impact on Georgians living in central Florida: all residential property owner's fees were raised from $1 per month to $5 per year effective 1 January 1942 while owners of businesses were also levied an additional tax at 50 cents per day against profits over $3 million annualized until 1947 inclusive).
