Margate is a town in Monroe County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The land around Margate was private property until 1851 when it was purchased by Colonel John Purdy from the Seminole tribe for $5,000 (). Captain Isaac Norris and his family moved to Margate in 1855 from Winter Garden following Creek's Expedition which destroyed much of what was then known as Florida. In 1865 a group of businessmen led by A.M. Jenkins bought all of the land east of Harbor Boulevard and north of Interstate 95 for $2 million (). They named their new development Margate after one of their holdings in England (the old Margate), but they never lived there and only developed a small portion of it. In 1930 Raymond Burr bought most of the I-95 exit on Harbor Boulevard which became Burr Road. He donated it to the government as a public highway system corridor through Monroe County called "Raymond Burr Highway". In 1935 he also donated land south along Harbor Boulevard between US 31st Avenue and I-95/US Stuart Highway to build what would become known as Sunnyside Village; this village straddles US 31st Avenue and Summerhill Drive today.
