Margate, Florida is a small town located on the tip of the island that bears its name. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census, making it one of the most densely populated towns in the United States. It is also home to Margate Marina and Resort, which is one of the largest marinas in Florida. The town was founded by English settlers in 1823 and first appeared on maps as "Marlotte." In 1841, it became part of Jacksonville Territory and remained so until 1898 when it became part of Jacksonville County. After being incorporated as a town in 1907, Margate experienced rapid growth during World War II due to its strategic location between Jacksonville and Tampa Bay. The war led to an influx of soldiers and their families who flooded the area and bolstered Margate's economy. Margate, Florida is a census-designated place in Lee County, Florida, United States. The population was 5,566 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Combined Statistical Area. The area that would become Margate was first settled by Europeans in the early 1800s and was known as "Titusville." The town rose to prominence during World War II as a munitions production center for the war effort. After the war, Margate became known for its beaches and seafood restaurants. In recent years, however, Margate has seen steady growth as a bedroom community for Orlando proper. The history of Margate begins with two families who bought land near Titusville in 1892: John and Louisa Hufnagel from Germany and their son Julius married Anna Bache from Russia on December 10 of that year. Anna's parents were farmers who had come to America in 1848 and established a farm east of Tampa Bay. When Anna married Julius, she became one of the first women to own property in what would become Margate. By 1923, however, most of what would become downtown Margate had been developed as housing developments called "Eveready". In 1955, when Daytona Beach became an independent city, parts of Lee County including MargATE went along with it; much like Peachtree City today which borders Atlanta on three sides but functions independently within that metropolitan area (with its own police department). In 1978 additional territory includinghandle completely within Greater Orlando when Orange County was created following passage of the took effect law creating both counties followed same boundaries: all hamlets within 1/4 mile (1 km) or less were placed into one county while larger towns were placed into another adjacent county where they currently reside: Osceola County – south side of Orange River; Lake Okeechobee – east side thereof; Marion County – north side thereof; Polk County – west side thereof;and Lee County - east side thereof That left only about 12 miles (19 km) between any two neighboring counties so margates residents could easily commute to their jobs located just outside those counties if needed or if they desired some out-of-the-way location while still maintaining close ties to family and friends residing inside those neighboring counties
Margate, Florida was founded on December 12, 1821 by Captain John Lloyd and his family. The community of Margate was named for the town in County Mayo in Ireland where they had been living until their displacement by Americans during the American Revolution. The village of Margate grew up around the Captain's wharf which led to its present location on Pensacola Bay. In 1836, an act passed by Congress designated land at Pensacola Bay as a Naval Station with the intent of developing it into an area for military purposes. The first naval ship to dock at Pensacola Bay was the brig USS Constitution (1836-37) which arrived there on July 27, 1836. The Naval Station served as a base for Commodore James Farragut's fleet during his famed "Great White Fleet" expedition against Mexico in 1846-47 and also played a role in later Seminole Wars. Afterward, it reverted back to civilian control and eventually fell into disrepair until it was reactivated as a commercial port in 1974 under President Gerald Ford following national Renewal campaign promise. Today, Margate is home to several businesses including Pensacola Yacht Harbour and Marina; Pete's Seafood & Oyster Co.; Harbor Master Marina; Nicklaus Golf Course; and Stonington Landing Resort & Spa which offers vacation rentals near the bayfront property overlooking Penang Island while also hosting events such as boat races and fishing tournaments throughout the year
