The Margate military community has been involved in the defense of the United States of America for over seventy years. The Margate Naval Air Station, which is located on the Blackwater River, was one of the first naval air stations in the country. The station served as a vital training ground for fighter pilots and bomber crews during World War II. After the war, Margate became a major Navy base and remained so until 1994 when it was closed due to budget cuts. In 1995, Margate Military Park was established adjacent to the naval base to provide recreational opportunities for troops and their families. Today, Margate is home to over 50 military installations including 2 Marine Corps bases and 4 Army posts. Today's military community in Margate centers around its rich history and culture. Margate, Florida is a small town in Alachua County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,597 at the 2010 census. It is located on the Gulf of Mexico and is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The town was founded as a fishing village on an island in the bay just north of where it now stands. In 1892, Margate became a municipality and in 1916 it was annexed by Jacksonville. The post office closed in 1951. In recent years, tourism has been one of Margate's mainstay industries. The majority of its residents are retirees or other senior citizens who enjoy spending time on their property or visiting local shops and restaurants that line Gulf Boulevard which runs through the town center. There are also several golf courses in the area making Margate an attractaitve place for tourists as well as locals who take advantage of its many activities year-round including swimming, boating, windsurfing and sailing; both family-oriented activities (e.g., picnics) and more intense activity such as racing championships for horses or dogsoccasionally occur during summer months when temperatures reach about 30 degrees Fahrenheit (18 degrees Celsius). The history of Margate goes back to 1892 when settlers from Pensacola arrived from England with plans to establish a fishing village on an island off the coast of Florida known then as "Island Point." On November 17th that year they sailed ashore with their goods bound for New York City but were met by Native American chief Tallahassee who offered them passage if they would build him a shelter against the weather while he hunted deer near his stronghold on Pensacola Bayou. After refusing Tallahassee's offer, they built themselves homes along what is today Gulf Boulevard between 4th Street SW and 5th Street SE after purchasing some land from developer John Pritchard.. Many later families moved into what is now downtown Margate including those who started building there in 1924 when James Aikens purchased land east of 3rd Street SW; this allowed him to add two blocks south of where he currently lives next door to businesses like Sears & Roebuck which grew outta his original store building which served first as a garage before becoming one large structure housing all sorts of items unrelated to groceries until it burned down around 1970s giving rise to what is now known locally as "The Warehouse" complex across Southwest Third Avenue from current day Main Street NW cornering FourthStreet NE - see aerial photo below: James Aikens descendants continue living there today along with most recently Bill Aiken's descendants - father Tom Easley Elementary School students attending Roosevelt High School attend classes inside this multi-story brick schoolhouse complex dating back to 1923!
Margate was founded by Captain John Margate in 1795. The town prospered due to its natural resources, which included salt water and bayous. In 1819, the town passed from English to American control when Florida acquired its independence from Spain. The area that now includes Margate became a part of Jacksonville, Florida in 1827. In 1926, the first hurricane hit Florida and caused widespread damage throughout the state. The storm also resulted in over $5 million in losses for the state. After the storm, many residents relocated to safer areas and Margate continued to prosper as a small town with strong community ties. In 1978, Margate was incorporated as a city and has since grown into one of Jacksonville's most thriving neighborhoods.
