The Margate National Guard has been in existence since 1920. The unit was organized as a military organization on December 3, 1920. At that time, the Florida Legislature passed a bill designating the Margate Branch of the United States Coast Guard as an arm of the Florida National Guard. The guard was re-organized on January 1, 1921 and authorized to wear the colors of either state’s flag. On February 15, 1921, Captain Rufus W. Kapp assigned Company C of the Margate National Guard to provide security for Governor Hernando de Soto during his visit to Margate. On March 9th, 1921 Captain Kapp welcomed Mayor John Prentice and other civic leaders at Harbour View Park when he dedicated the park located on this location. On May 15th 1922Captain Kapp relieved First Lieutenant Charles Aiken from command of Company C and placed First Lieutenant Arthur Purdy in command effective June 1st 1922 The shipwrecked men who had set up their camp near Beaches were removed by members of Company C on July 3rd 1922 On October 17th 1922First Lieutenant Purdy was promoted to Second Lieutenant and assume command of company In 1923 Captain Kappy retired from active duty with rank of Major General . In 1924 Captain Glynn Mears assumed command duties until 1925 when he relinquished those duties in order to become Commandant US Coast Guard Reserve Eastern District . In 1926 Captain J Fenton took command duties until 1928 when he resigned due to illness On November 12 1928First Sergeant John Keegan became Second Sergeant under Captains Fenton and Keegan until December 6 1929When First Sergeant Keegan became Acting Commander appellant transferred his position back to original commanding officer (Captain Glynn Mears) which is why there are no records between these two officers during this time period

After the war, it returned home and became an infantry regiment in 1946 before being re-named the Florida National Guard Regiment on October 1, 1951. Margate, Florida is a small town located in Hillsborough County, Florida. The population was 7,546 at the 2000 census. The town is part of the Tampa Bay metropolitan area. It is bordered by St Petersburg to the east and north, Clearwater to the west, and Pinellas Park to the south. The first settlers in Margate were farmers who arrived in 1836 from Maryland. They named their community after the town of Margate on England's North Sea coast. By 1845, there were only 10 people living in Margate; however, it grew rapidly during the next few decades due to its location and trade connections with nearby Tampa Bay. In 1868, a road was built that connected Margate with St Petersburg and other surrounding communities. This road became known as "Route 66". In 1898, two major railroadroads intersected in Margate: the Tampa-St Petersburg Railroad (now Amtrak) and Gulf Coast Railway (now CSX). As these companies grew larger than any one company could handle alone, various partnerships were formed which helped make Margate an important transportation center for both residents and businesses alike. One such partnership was formed between Gulf Coast Railway and Atlantic City Railroad which allowed for cargo trains travelling between Tampa Bay/St Petersburg and Jacksonville daily via MARC Train service. As economic development increased throughout Greater Tampa Bay during the late 1800s and early 1900s, so did demand for residential space within walking distance of many businesses or services found throughout downtown Tampa proper or south of US 41 near Clearwater Harbor Boulevard/SR 1 . accordingly , developers began purchasing parcels of land along SR 1 bordering Clearwater Harbour Boulevard where they could build large homes without having to worry about traffic congestion on State Road 67 (the present-day Causeway Blvd.). Known as "The Beach", this bisected district quickly became one of South Hillsborough County's most prestigious addresses . With access to wide open spaces surroundings many upscale high schools including Hillsborough Community College across SR 1 from trendy commercial areas like Waterfront Plaza off Sunrise Highway also contributed to making this enclave more desirable . Development continued apace until World War II when much of what now makes up The Beach was destroyed by bombing raids over southern Hillsborough County as part of V-2 rocket attacks against German targets inside South Carolina during WWII . Although some remain extant today such as brand new developments along Sunrise Highway just outside Ofhillsborough Regional High School complex - generally speaking it has been replaced by newer high-rise buildings associated with office parks being constructed around central Pinellas Park while much older residences have been slowly abandoned or rehabbed into modern dwellings
