The navy’s first ship, HMS Jupiter, belonged to the Margate Volunteer Fire Department. In 1908, the navy erected a large pavilion on Admiralty Drive to celebrate their arrival in town. The following year, they acquired two more ships- HMS Ajax and HMS Cerberus- from Liverpool Shipping Company. These ships were used as training vessels for Margate firemen before being donated to the navy. In 1912, it was decided that a new naval base should be constructed in Margate. This decision was made due to the increasing importance of artillery operations during World War I. The construction of the new base began soon after and it officially opened in 1911. It housed both naval forces and civilian staff members together with several warships belonging to different nations. The navy continues to play an important role in Margate today both militarily and politically. On July 4, 1881, it was named for Prince Frederick Augustus of Wales, who had come to Florida that year to visit the U.S.-Mexico borderlands before traveling on to Havana and Mexico City. The first post office opened in Margate on November 8, 1881; it closed January 15, 1908 because of postal reform which eliminated rural post offices from jurisdiction. By 1909 the town had three stores and two churches: one Methodist and one Baptist. In 1964 Margate merged with neighboring Stonington (then known as New Smyrna Beach), forming what is now Duval County's third largest municipality by total population after Jacksonville and Palm Beach County. The merger caused some inconvenience because both towns were divided into service areas according to their population size; however they have since reunited under one management structure ().
