Margate, Florida is a town located on the north coast of barrier island in Lee County, Florida. It is part of the Orlando metropolitan area. The population was 18,851 as of 2010[1]. In November 2014 bestowed upon Margate's newest recruit(s), Lt.(later Sergeant) Kaylee Hoffman and Maj.(later Lieutenant) Chase Cope an honorary distinction for their service during Hurricane Irma.[3] On October 15th of that year (2015), During National POLICE Week festivities at HarbourFront Casino Resort & Spa., Capt.(later Sergeant) Nathan Smith was presented with a plaque recognizing his many accomplishments within the department dating back to 2002[4].

Margate, Florida History Margate, Florida is a town located in Clay County, Florida. The population was 906 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area. The name "Margate" is derived from an early English settlers’ name for what is now the town of Clayville, Alabama - Margate on the Peninsula. At first it was simply called "Maregates". In 1892 when a post office named Maregates opened in that locality, the name was changed to Margate to avoid confusion with nearby Mobile and Pensacola. The present day settlement date back to 1905 when developer Cuthbert Hatton purchased land adjacent to Schoolhouse Bayou in what is now the core of Margate. He built a bungalow and named it "Hatton's Bluff". A grocery store and cafe were added later on which operated until 1951 when they were closed by then-Mayor James Herron because he felt that tourism would take over as primary industry in this new community. By 1957 there were two churches in Margate - First Presbyterian and Methodist - as well as a small hotel serving local tourists and locals alike who used it for meetings of various civic organizations before moving into their permanent homes during World War II when many residents enlisted or volunteered for military service; consequently, most current buildings representing early Margate development reflect wartime use or modification/redevelopment efforts by those associated with that time period The first school building erected in Margate was probably built about 1895-1896 by Jno Epps (a white settler) under contract from State Board of Education (SBE).
