In 1821, Colonel John Stratton founded a farm about one mile (1 km) south of modern-day Margate called Belle Isle Farms after his wife Belle Isle, who had been born in nearby Winter Haven. By 1825, most residents were farmers with only a few cattle and pigs operations left; however, during this time land prices increased rapidly so farming became more profitable than smuggling salt across the Strait of Gibraltar to Europe or trafficking goods through Cuba overland. A gristmill was built in 1828 and remained operational until 1865; by 1870 there were three churches: First Baptist Church (founded 1858), Second Baptist Church (1869), and Methodist Episcopal Chapel (1870). A cotton gin operated from 1861 to 1865; thereafter mills resumed but production stopped due to lack of market demand for cotton products around this time period.
