The United States Army was founded in 1775 and has been active in Melbourne, Florida since World War I. The unit that currently occupies the old Victoria Barracks is the 6th Infantry Regiment, which was first organized in 1912. Some of these units include: 1st Battalion (7th Infantry), 3rd Brigade Combat Team (4th Infantry Division), 2nd Brigade Combat Team (10th Infantry Division), 7th Marine Regiment (1st Marine Expeditionary Unit), 10th Airborne Regiment (First Cavalry Division). These soldiers provide valuable services on site or support operations elsewhere around the state and country. Melbourne was founded in 1857 by Captain James Cook and his crew as a trading post on the Tampa River. In 1905, Melbourne became an incorporated municipality. The city's name comes from Melbourne Downs Racecourse which opened in 1881 and ran until 1959; it was located just east of the present-day city limits. The first permanent European settlers in what is now Melbourne were French Catholic missionaries who arrived in 1763 and named their new settlement after bishopric located in France – Notre Dame de Victoria (Victoria). They built a chapel there known as Our Lady of Lourdes Chapel which still stands today on Miami Road near US 27/State Road 84. In 1857, Captain James Cook's crew set up a trading post on the Tampa River at what is now downtown Melbourne. The original location of the post may have been nearer to wherepresent-day US 27/State Road 84 meets Miami Road but this has not been determined definitively. A plaque found at the old site commemoratesCaptain Cook’s arrival: “Arrived here on board HMS Resolution under Capt J C G Moolman 8th Sep 1857” A second trading post was established about two miles to the northwest at present dayMallory Pointe (near present day State Road 516). From these posts many entrepreneurs started businesses that would later become integral parts of local economies including: W F Henson & Sons grocery store (1876), Flaherty Glass Works (1907), J P Farrell Company druggist (1920), W R Dearborn Liquors Incorporated Wholesale grocer (1926) and finally Vons Supermarket chain supermarket with its first store opening at 601 S Broad Street in 1962 before moving to its current location at 601 N Broad Street in 2006 Families began arriving here during Seminole Wars era when American military forces were stationed here for encampment duty or as refugees fleeing Indian attacks across Central Florida During World War II many factories were established such as Lockheed Aircraft Corp., Boeing Co., Standard Oil Co., Potter Printing Paper Mills etcetera After WWII more people vacated and town declined until it regained some life with establishment of community center, library and several small businesses during 1970s through 1980s

Melbourne, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida. The population was 27,569 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee-Miami metropolitan area. The first Europeans to encounter Melbourne were French traders who landed there in 1614. The Spanish took over control of the area in 1763 and renamed it Mexico City after their capital, Mexico City. In 1821, Melbourne became part of United States territory when Florida was annexed into the US. In 1828, two brothers named James and John Wetherbee founded a trading post on the west side of Tampa Bay called "Wetherbee's Landing". They also developed land on what is today downtown Melbourne. In 1830 they renamed their post "Melbourne" after the English city of Manchester which they had been visiting while living in Canada. At that time it was one of only a few American cities with an official name outside of New York City and Philadelphia (the other two were Baltimore and Washington D.C.). The first settlement in Melbourne was made up of people from both Britain and America who arrived during its early days as an outpost for trade on Tampa Bay's west coast. By 1834 more than 100 people lived in Melbourne proper; most worked at Wetherbee's Landing or land grant plantations around Tampa Bay (now Ybor City). During this time period many different cultures mixed together including Africans brought to work on plantations and Native Americans who helped build roads, bridges and churches near present day Clearwater Beach Boulevard/Hollywood Road intersection
Melbourne, Florida was founded in 1821 by Captain James Cook as the "Mileka Colony." The name is derived from the Mocambo River which flowed through the region. In 1830, Melbourne moved to its current location on Indian Key and became a stop on the traveling gold rush trail. The city's first mayor was John C. Musgrave and it had a population of only 100 people when it incorporated as a municipality in 1854. By 1860, Melbourne had grown to 1,500 people and annexed parts of Jacksonville. In 1865, Melbourne became part of the Union Territory of Florida and declined annexation by Jacksonville. On January 7, 1868, Melbourne organized as a city under charter from Jacksonville with a population of 571 people. That same year saw the opening of what is now City Hall Square with exclusive use for mayoral meetings until 1906 when they were moved to State Capitol Square where they remain today. On November 6th 1909 – just one week after becoming an independent city – Melbourne hosted its first municipal election since incorporation with 50% voter turnout against no candidate receiving more than 25%. As an independent city, Victoria never ratified statehood but became an integral part of Florida’s history via annexation into Hillsborough County in 1925 In 1916 Mayor Frank Boccia successfully lobbied for passage of Amendment 2 to the Florida Constitution giving citizens Of Victoria voting rights and creating elections within three years instead of six years as required by state law at that time On July 15th 1920 during World War I veteran Samuel Jaffe accidentally killed George Weems while driving in Victoria; Jaffe was later tried and found not guilty by reason alone
