The United States Coast Guard was founded on 4 May 1819 as the first military service to be established in Florida. The Coast Guard's first mission was to protect navigation and shipping in the area. The Coast Guard's primary function has been patrol of the U.S. coastline since 1915. The Coast Guard currently has over 9,000 members who are spread throughout 41 states and 3 Canadian provinces. Today, the Coast Guard plays a vital role in our society by providing law enforcement, firefighting, and rescue services along with coastal security patrols and education programs for children. In Melbourne, Florida, the Coast Guard Station is home to one of its largest collections of maritime artifacts: a collection of over 160 cannons dating back to 1798 when Spanish pirates attacked American vessels near this site. This fortuitous find led to the donation of these cannons by Admiral John D'Avenant in 1932 as part of his Captains Collection at Miami Historical Society Museum

Melbourne, Florida is a city in Polk County,Florida. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. The city is located on the Apalachicola River, southeast of Tallahassee and about northwest of Gainesville. The history of Melbourne dates back to 1836 when A.J.Biggs donated land to be used as a town site in what would become Polk County. On January 17, 1843, the first permanent settler arrived in Melbourne – James Boggs – who named his new community after himself, Victoria (a name he had been given by his parents). In 1865, Captain John Sledge became the first white man to cross the Apalachicola River into Florida and founded Jacksonville on his arrival in that state. For many years Jacksonville was considered Miami-Dade County's biggest city with over 2 million residents within its boundaries; however, Orlando emerged as Floridians' second-largest metropolitan area after Melbourne by 1990 according to the U.S. Census Bureau's American Community Survey estimates from 2000-2010. In 1892 Jno.[patrick] Wessels bought 4500 acres near downtown from Andrew Jackson Guthrie for $10 per acre and started development of what would eventually be known as "the University Park". In 1905 Wessels sold additional land parcels totaling 10 acres which formed what is now University Drive (or State Road 522) between Pine Street and US 27/State Road 8 near Florida International University (FIU). This area served as an agricultural research station operated by FSU until it closed in 1971 when all external funding ceased for college teaching purposes following passage of Senate Bill 783 which established FSU's self-supporting status through gifts from private individuals rather than government appropriations like those received prior thereto On December 12th 1916 local men led by Captains M[ichael] Grier built a small fortification on Battle Creek Bridge across the Apalachicola River opposite Fort Walton Beach . Named "Fort Walton Beach" during World War I because GeneralWalton had moved his headquarters there in 1917 after Confederate forces abandoned Tampa Bay , it began operations as a military post along with other posts around Key West during World War II under lendlease control until it reverted back to civilian control effective 1 September 1945 when Army Control Commission assumed authority over most military installations including Fort Walton Beach On November 15th 1957 Hurricane Betsy made landfall just east of Melbourne adjacent to Gulfstream Airport causing severe damage along parts of southwestern Florida including much destruction west of Interstate 95 where Sarasota lies It remains one of Coral Gables' few surviving hurricanes

Since 9/11/2001, DHS has directed all U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officers to provide enhanced homeland security by gifting confiscated items from smugglers to illegal immigrants including weapons, drugs, vehicles and even baby births! This year alone CBP has seized more than 1 million pounds of contraband! From then on, Government grants and donations were essential to help support the Coast Guard’s mission. In 1980, Congress passed The National Defense Authorization Act which established the United States Coast Guard Foundation to provide long term financial stability for the coast guard. This was followed by The Department of Homeland Security Appropriations Act in 2002 which authorized $5 million for additional funding for the USCG Foundation. This current donation program began in 2006 when $10 million was appropriated to support USCG programs across eight operating areas including search and rescue, maritime security, coastal water safety, fisheries management, scientific research and development, and training needs.
Melbourne, Florida was founded in 1836 as a citrus plantation by Captain John A. MacLennan of the United States Coast Guard. The town rapidly grew during the early 1800s as refugees from Hurricane Andrew flooded into the area and began to settle. In 1853, Melbourne became part of St. Petersburg, Florida and quickly became one of its most important cities. As Tampa gradually solidified its leadership inFlorida society, Melbourne's position among Floridian cities diminished until it ceased to exist as a municipally-based city altogether in 1957.1 Today, Melbourne is a census-designated place (CDP) located within Hillsborough County on the east side of Tampa Bay and is known for its beautiful beaches, cultural attractions such as the Tampa Museum of Art and performing arts venues such as the Bradlee Center for Arts & Media. However, much of Melbourne's past remains largely unknown to the general public; this is particularly true for its significant role in American history prior to Florida's admission into the Union in 18982 Melbourne was first settled by Native Americans around what is today called Old Victoria Park on November 3rd, 1795 according to Records from white settlers who arrived at that location before 1800 AD. There are references to Indian settlements along what would become Tampa Bay dating back centuries ago but nothing specific about these settlements can be found until after Captain John A MacLennan’s U.S.-Coast Guard expedition explored those coastal areas northwest tip of Cuba on December 14th 1796 while en route through St Petersburg Harbor What followed were three months long exploration that changed everything about life on this newly discovered coastlines including discoveries made near now’s Sarasota/Bradenton area which were later named Key West then Mobile Alabama before finally reaching their final destination restocked with fresh water supplies at Pensacola Sound where they named their new harbor “Tampa” or “Alaska” because they thought there might be another continent out there!3 By 1800 ACG had built 3 houses near where today stands our Municipal Building every Nook And cranny was filled with Fresh Fruit treesFruit tree removal service available
