The early 20th century saw significant growth for Melbourne thanks to its status as an important port on both riverfronts - especially its position within minutes' driving of both Miami and Fort Lauderdale - and to the city's strong automobile industry (which helped make Melbourne one of Florida's leading automotive capitals). However, by 1930 Melbourne had lost much of its industrial base to neighboring Jacksonville and other areas east of I-95; however, it has since regained some significant portions of its former industrial base through such activities as manufacturing products for NASA and other government agencies; engineering services; retail trade; tourism; and real estate development. Today, Melbourne remains an important economic center in South Florida - home to major airports such as MIA International Airport and Fort Lauderdale–Hollywood International Airport - with thriving local businesses that contribute $8 billion annually to budgetary districts in Palm Beach County alone.

In 1821, Floridas Purchase made Melbourne part of the U.S., and it rapidly grew into one of America's most populous cities during the Pre-Civil War era. The economy was based on cotton farming until after World War II when other industries began to grow including construction materials, apparel manufacturing, aluminum production and tourismbased businesses such as nursing homes and casino resorts. By 2010 however, Melbourne had shrunken to its current size due to suburbanization and loss of jobs within its core industry

The city experienced dramatic growth over the decades due to its status as an important transportation hub and its location within easy reach of various industries. In 2002, Melbourne was awarded city status and began to undergo significant development including construction of new roads, hospitals, schools and other infrastructure projects. In recent years, however, economic conditions have deteriorated and much of the population has left for jobs in surrounding cities.
