Melbourne, Florida is a city in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 17,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Jacksonville metropolitan area and is located just east of Tallahassee on Interstate 10. The history of coffee begins with African Americans working as sharecroppers in what is now Melbourne in the early 1800s. Coffee was brought to this area by white men looking for an early crop to sell to their mates back home. Black Men's Coffee Company was founded in 1892 by Gullah Islander Robert "Bob" Hardcastle and his brother-in-law John Liggins. The company grew quickly, growing into one of the largest commercial coffee houses in south Florida. In 1912, Bob Hardcastle sold his interest in Black Men's Coffee Company to brothers Harry and Lewis Hilliard who operated it until 1974 when it merged with J&L Coffee Co.. In 1914 Harry Hilliard built the first permanent building on Main Street where he would continue selling coffee until his death in 1977. In 1934 Harry Hilliard’s widow Florence took over operation from her husband and ran it until her death in 1984; she bequeathed it to her son Lewis Hilliard III who continued operations until 2000. From 1938 through 1945 three different groups of womenoperated J&L Coffee - Mrs Fannie Whitehead (1938-1945), Mrs Rita Hixon (1945-1948) and Mrs Alma Cannon(1948-1960). Finally from 1960 thru 1970 several ladiesworked part time under the direction of Mrs Alma Cannon while other members served as President/CEOs. Melbourne, Florida is an unincorporated community in Polk County, Florida, United States. It is located on the east side of the city of Tampa Bay. The population was 1,898 as of the 2010 census. The community was named for Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. A post office was established at Melbourne in 1903 and remained in operation until 1959. In 1907 a Methodist church was built in the community and served until 1978. In 1912 a railway station was built at Melbourne by the Tampa Bay Railway Company to serve as a junction between the Tampa and St Petersburg railways. The tracks were abandoned in 1971 but remain visible today as part of Turnbull Park Drive; one stop before Interstate 4 (I-4). The first commercial development in Melbourne occurred when J C White sold chicken feed from his truck near US-1A Boulevard and US-1B Boulevard in 1916. By 1918 there were five small businesses operating along US-1A Boulevard: four shops selling groceries and one food service business that did laundry services for local residents and tourists. In 1919 White moved his business to what is now known as RMN/Fidelity Foods which became one of America's most popular grocery stores with over 2 million square feet (120 m2) of retail space across fourteen brands including Safeway, Kroger, Albertson's Grocery Stores, Piggly Wiggly Markets, Stop 'n' Shop and Trader Joe's Neighborhood Market chain stores throughout North America. By 1941 only two small businesses still operated: J C White's store on US-1A Boulevard opposite present day Hooters restaurantand Mrs Winslow's bakery & candy store on US-1B Boulevard north of I-4 exit number 9 (the present day site of First Baptist Church). At first, the Spanish settlers were primarily interested in farming and stockraising; however, over time they also began to build ranchos (hectares of land) in the area. By 1840, there were over 50 ranchos in present-day Melbourne. The growth of Rancho Victoria led to increased competition for land and resources among Spain’s American colonies; as a result, numerous cession agreements were made between Spain and America during this period which allowed for vast amounts of land to be sold off in what is now Miami-Dade County. In 1847-48, following a series of earthquakes that struck central Mexico City, Mexican settlers migrated westward along the Santa Fe Trail through Texas and New Mexico. They brought with them their traditional culture and economy – ranching became an important part of their lifestyle. Consequently, when American soldiers discovered gold deposits near Saugus Heights on November 12th fortuitously named “Goldsburg Day” (in honor of General James Kenedy), many Mexicans decided to move into what is now Melbourne because it seemed like an ideal location for mining operations. However unknown at the time was how valuable these minerals would become once processed and exploited; accordingly various businesses sprang up around Goldsburg including a smelter which produced sterling silverware under the name Royal Adelaide Company. As production moved from rural areas such as La Romana into more urban areas across America during this era, many Spaniards followed suit or left Australia for similar opportunities abroad – until finally Tucson took over as capital city with its wealth derived from its copper mines during the late 19th century).
